In a world driven by uncertainty, competition, and fragile economic stability, the burden on mental health has been growing steadily. While conversations on mental well-being have grown louder in recent years, most struggles still remain hidden behind social expectations, particularly those related to productivity, success, and traditional gender roles. Employment instability tends to be one of the strongest triggers linked to the deterioration of adults’ mental well-being.
A job is not merely a source of income; it is deeply entwined with identity, self-worth, routine, and social respect. When employment is lost, the impact is rarely confined to bank balances. Anxiety, shame, helplessness, and isolation often follow, straining relationships at home and eroding confidence. That reality came into sharp focus after a widely shared incident where a man shared a painful video of his family’s changed behavior after job loss, sparking debate on men’s mental health.

Man’s video about his struggles after losing his job went viral on social media
The video, shared by a user named Director Dayal, presents an unfiltered emotional account following his resignation from work just days earlier. The clip, entitled “Gareeb beta toh maa-baap ko bhi achha nahi lagta,” shows Dayal outdoors and narrates a painful shift he noticed within his own home after becoming unemployed. His story, though personal, reflected an experience many found uncomfortably familiar.
In the video, Dayal says that when he used to work and send money back home from another city, the conditions around him were different. Simple gestures, like being offered extra rotis by his mother at mealtime, made him feel wanted and liked. He saw these as silent acknowledgements of his new status as a contributor to the household.
However, that sense of worth disappeared rapidly once he lost his job. Dayal recounts a mealtime incident in which he requested additional food. Instead of receiving food, he was given a cold reply from his father. He says that it was the difference in tone that taught him how esteem at home can silently be tied to whether a man is bringing in an income.
Reflecting on the incident, Dayal speaks about how it feels to carry this emotional burden of being unwanted or less respected because one is jobless. In the video, he tells young men to first find financial security; otherwise, dignity and acceptance disappear with money.

How did netizens react to the video?
The video quickly went viral, drawing an outpouring of reactions. Many shared personal stories of facing emotional distance or judgment after losing their jobs, especially at the hands of family. Others challenged this mindset, which equates a man’s worth to income alone. Many also called for more empathy and understanding within households. A great number of viewers also encouraged Dayal, stating that unemployment is temporary and does not define the value of a person.
