For politicians, being in the limelight is common, not only because of their policies and decisions, but also because of their mode of communicating with people. In the context of India, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s style of communication has always been one of the most heated topics of discussion. As the years have passed, it has become increasingly common for Prime Minister Modi to address the masses via rallies, parliamentary addresses, radio addresses like Mann Ki Baat, social media, and addresses on television.
While his supporters argue that these channels allow him to communicate directly with the masses without the mediation of traditional media, the absence of regular press conferences by the prime minister has frequently sparked debate. Recently, the topic has come to light once again after BJP Member of Parliament Tejasvi Surya was asked as to why Prime Minister Narendra Modi does not conduct press conferences. Surya’s response to this question quickly went viral, reigniting discussions on the issue.

My question to you is, India is one of the biggest democracies as we know. Even though we are the biggest democracy, what’s your stance, what’s your saying about an honorable prime minister not attending any press conference in more than 10 years?
Before answering the posed question, Surya described it as a “great question to start with” before explaining why he believes the role of press conferences has diminished in the age of digital communication.
He then went on to say:

Don’t you think? Like how I said, speeches are so yesterday. In the age of 24/7 social media, where I can talk to my voters directly, the purpose of press conferences, where you have a certain barrier between the leader and the people, which comes between you. It is redundant. It’s not that the PM is not communicating. The PM communicates every day.
