Varun Gandhi Responds To Kangana Ranaut

Kangana Ranaut, a well-known Bollywood actress, sparked controversy on Thursday by claiming that India earned real freedom in 2014 when the Modi-led government took power and described India’s independence in 1947 as bheek or alms.

Ranaut, who was just awarded the Padma Shri, was presumably referring to the BJP’s election victory in 2014. Her right-wing views and jibes at opposition politicians have created controversy in the past but this one is surely too much that even the right wings leaders can’t digest her comments.

In that small video, Kangana was seen saying in Hindi on a news channel programme,

“That was not freedom, but ‘bheekh’ (alms), and the freedom came in 2014.”

Varun Gandhi, a BJP MP, slams Kangana by challenging her to clarify whether her thought was madness or treason.

Varun tweeted in Hindi while posting Kangana’s video,

“Sometimes an insult to the sacrifice and penance of Mahatma Gandhi, sometimes the respect of his killer, and now the disdain for the sacrifices of millions of freedom fighters from Shaheed Mangal Pandey to Rani Laxmibai, Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekhar Azad, Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose and more. Should I call this thinking madness or treason?”

Leaders across the political spectrum also hit out at Kangana

At the same time, former Bihar Chief Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi asked President Ram Nath Kovind to revoke Kangana’s prestigious Padma Shri award due to her controversial statement.

Former Bihar Chief Minister Manjhi took to Twitter to say,

“The President should revoke Kangana Ranaut’s Padma Shri award, or the world will learn that Mahatma Gandhi, Jawahar Lal Nehru, Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, Bhagat Singh, Sardar Patel, Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, and others begged in front of British for freedom, which they were granted. Kangana Ranaut should be ashamed of herself. Times Now will have to apologise for providing a forum for such discussions, and Kangana should be banned from the channel.”

Salman Soz slammed those people who cheered when Ranaut stated India’s true independence was in 2014 since 1947 was a charity case. He also remembered the millions who fought the British, including those who were slain or imprisoned, as well as those who loved India until their last breath.

Priyanka Chaturvedi, a Shiv Sena leader, contrasted Ranaut’s comments to those of another BJP member who recently asserted that India was given freedom on a 99-year lease. She said,

“New Ruchi Pathak on the block. From 99 years lease to bheek main mili azaadi. All the blood, sweat and balidan (sacrifice) of our freedom fighters including Jhansi ki Rani dismissed to please the master. The WhatsApp history fans.”

Preeti Sharma Menon of the Aam Aadmi Party claimed she has filed a police complaint against Ranaut for making seditious and inflammatory statements under Sections 504, 505 and 124A. Section 504 of the IPC deals with deliberate insult with the goal to instigate a breach of the peace, Section 505 with comments intended to cause “public mischief,” and Section 124A with sedition. She tweeted,

“Hope to see some action. @CPMumbai @DGPMaharashtra”

Ranaut may not be on Twitter, but her name was trending, with many people expressing in, including historian S Irfan Habib.

While referring to Kangana, Habib wrote,

“Shamelessness is abysmal.”

Swara Bhasker, who also shared the video footage on Twitter, questioned others who were heard clapping in response to Ranaut’s remarks.

Bhasker, who has worked with Ranaut in the Tanu Weds Manu film series and has been a critic of the actor wrote,

“Who are the idiots who are clapping is what I want to know.”

Others were enraged as well, with some doubting her recent Padma Shri award.

Filmmaker Onir asked

“Will we now start celebrating a new Independence Day?”

Badminton player Jwala Gutta wrote without naming the actress,

“What do you call a person who only spews venom when she/he opens their mouth!!! Just curious!!”

One social media user said the nonsense talk by the Padma Shri winner was a direct disrespect to all our freedom fighters.

Ranaut, whose Twitter account has been banned, has retaliated on Instagram. She said in her Insta stories,

“Even though I clearly mentioned 1857 revolution first freedom fight which was curbed… which lead to more atrocities and cruelties from the British and almost a century later freedom was given to us in Gandhi’s begging bowl… Ja aur roo ab.”

Kangana Ranaut was awarded the Padma Shri only two weeks after winning her fourth National Film Award for best actress. In a video statement, Kangana expressed her gratitude for receiving the award for being a model citizen of India. Kangana’s words most likely not only tarnished her image but also cast doubt on her claims to be a model citizen of India and the dignity of Padma Shri.
