Cricket is a sport deeply ingrained in the cultural fabric of many countries, especially in South Asia. That’s why, especially in India, it’s more than just a game. However, like other games, it is also prone to rumored rivalries. While some will fade away within a time, others just become big day by day. Some even cause real misunderstandings between the players. Something like this was going to happen between Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma recently. However, Shubman made everything right at the right time with his Instagram story.

Not very long ago, certain Indian media outlets, such as Republic, reported that Gill unfollowed Rohit on Instagram following his removal from the Indian T20 World Cup 2024 roster because of “disciplinary issues.” The allegations state that Gill was traveling separately from the Indian team and engaging in unrelated commercial ventures in the US.

However, on Sunday, India’s opening batsman Shubman Gill ended all speculation of a potential falling out between himself and skipper Rohit Sharma by sharing a photo with him and his daughter in Florida. Captioning his story, he wrote,

“Sammy and I learning the art of discipline from Rohit Sharma.”

Why was Shubman Gill released from the Indian team?

India’s T20 World Cup group stage campaign came to an end on Saturday when a poor outfield in Florida caused their last match against Canada to be canceled. India finished first in Group A and advanced to the Super 8 stage with seven points from three games. However, soon, reports came out that Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan, members of the 4-man traveling reserves contingent, would be dropped from the team. They will also return to India while the Indian team prepares to head to the Caribbean for the upcoming round.

However, on social media, there have been rumors over the past several days that Gill is being sent to India for “disciplinary issues.”. Nonetheless, India batting coach Vikram Rathour has denied the rumors. He claimed that everything was pre-planned.

Rathour disclosed that the management group had made the decision to include just two reserve players in the squad for the Caribbean leg prior to the competition. During the press conference, Rathour said,

“This was a plan from the beginning. When we come to the US, four players will come together. After that two will be released and two will travel with us to West Indies. So, this plan was made from the beginning since the team was selected. This was planned so we are just following that.”

Regarding India’s T20 World Cup campaign, they advanced to the Super Eight after an undefeated group stage campaign in which they defeated Pakistan, Ireland, and the United States. On 20th June in Barbados, they will play Afghanistan in the first match of the World Cup’s second round.
