Ravichandran Ashwin bid goodbye to international cricket after the third India vs Australia Test ended in a draw in Brisbane in the ongoing Border Gavaskar Trophy. Just after the match, the world’s highest Test wicket-taker among active players with 537 scalps announced that he will no longer continue in international cricket. Two Tests are still left in the tournament.
After Ashwin retired from international cricket, his father remarked that ‘humiliation’ may be one of the reasons behind the sudden retirement
Ashwin was selected in only one of the three Tests in the Border Gavaskar Trophy series so far. A day after Ashwin announced that he would no longer be continuing in international cricket despite two matches left in the Test, his father mentioned that one of the reasons for this huge announcement was ‘humiliation’.

Talking to News18 he mentioned, his father Ravichandran mentioned,
“Definitely, there’s no doubt about it (being emotional for the family), because he was on the field almost for 14-15 years. The sudden changes and the retirement, it was a really kind of a shock. At the same time, we were expecting that also because humiliation was going on. How long he can just tolerate all those things? Probably, he would have decided on his own”
He added,
“I too came to know last minute, actually. What was going on in his mind I don’t know. He just announced. I too accepted it with full pleasure. I did not have any feelings at all for that. But the way he gave his retirement, one part I was very happy, another part not happy because he should have continued.”
He also mentioned that there could be many reasons for his son to declare this sudden retirement, but he thinks one of the reasons might have been humiliation. He said,
“(Retiring) is his (Ashwin’s) wish and desire, I cannot interfere in that, but the way in which he gave that, there could be many reasons. Only Ashwin knows, maybe humiliation.”

Man, like most South Indians do, you showed your class and demeanour much throughout the career. No matter what that is the most respectable apart.
Goes without saying the #s put you amongst the greats and in recognition of athletes who go beyond the sport.

Dads are super-emotional at heart. I firmly believe that his statement shouldn’t be analysed so deeply.
