With rising inflation, many people find that their annual salary struggles to keep up with the increasing cost of living, making it difficult to manage household expenses. However, earning ₹25 lakhs per annum is well above the average income. Right? Now, if someone earning this large amount claims that this amount is insufficient to support a family of three, it can definitely spark controversy. That is what happened.
A man named Sourav Datta’s tweet went viral where claiming that his ₹ 25 Lakh salary package is not enough to run a family of three
Having a ₹ 25 Lakh salary package means that you take a minimum of ₹ 1.5 Lakh to your home every month. If we look at this amount with a gaze of lower-middle-class families and even middle-class families it is a decent lot of money. However, someone do not find it enough for his family of three.

Recently, a man named Sourav Dutta stirred up a debate on X (formerly Twitter) by claiming that a salary of ₹25 lakhs per annum is insufficient to support a family of three. Interestingly, this isn’t the first time Dutta has made such a bold statement. He previously claimed that a ₹25 LPA salary is “nothing” in the current economic climate, particularly when discussing tech salaries. This time, he broke down the numbers to highlight how tight the budget can be even with such a seemingly high income.
He estimated that a ₹25 LPA salary easily provides him with around ₹1.5 lakhs per month, which, after accounting for essential expenses, leaves little room for savings or investments.
According to Dutta’s tweet, a family of three could easily spend ₹1 lakh each month on essentials like groceries, utilities, EMIs, or rent. An additional ₹25,000 might be spent on leisure activities like dining out, entertainment, and short trips. Another ₹25,000 could go toward medical expenses or emergencies.
After covering these basic needs and occasional luxuries, there’s hardly anything left for saving or investing. This perspective challenges the common perception that ₹25 LPA is a comfortable income. However, is it really the case? Netizens had varied opinions.

25LPA is too little for running a family.
25 LPA = in hand 1.5L per month.
Family of 3 would spend 1L on essentials, EMI / rent.
25K for eating out, movies, OTT, day trips.
25K for emergency and medical.
Nothing left to invest.

Social media divided over ₹25 LPA salary debate
Sourav Dutta’s recent tweet about ₹25 lakhs per annum being insufficient to support a family of three has sparked a heated debate online. To say that his breakdown of monthly expenses, suggesting that even a high salary leaves little room for savings or investment, drew mixed reactions would be a sheer understatement.
While some agreed, citing rising living costs and inflation, a large number of users disagreed, questioning the accuracy of his calculations. Critics of Dutta’s tweet argued that spending ₹25,000 monthly on medical expenses seems excessive for most families, especially if another ₹25,000 is being spent on leisure activities like dining out and day trips. They also pointed out that medical and emergency expenses are typically not consistent monthly costs.

A family spending 25k a month for “medical” would never spend 25k a month on miscellaneous expenses like eating out, day trips etc. Please don’t misguide people with ridiculous calculations.

Well, OTT and Eating Out can certainly be avoided.
You just need to learn cooking.
And spend a time with family. You won’t need OTT.

Sometimes I wonder Sourav Dutta belongs to Switzerland or UK. Definition of Indian middle class is different for us and him.
