With their incredible hundreds, Glenn Maxwell and David Warner lit up the ODI World Cup. However, a difference of opinion arose between them regarding the dazzling light at Delhi’s Arun Jaitley Stadium, which stole the limelight.
Following two straight losses to open the tournament, Australia regained confidence after crushing the Netherlands with an unprecedented 309-run triumph in Delhi. By recording the quickest century in World Cup history, Maxwell took center stage and became the talk of the town. However, apart from his century, his opinion on the light show generated a lot of buzz.

Due to the stadium’s nightclub-style light show, Maxwell had to cover his eyes while fielding during the game. That’s why he called the spectacle a “dumb” notion. He also expressed his uneasiness after having gone through a similar circumstance at a Perth Stadium Big Bash game. Maxwell expressed his displeasure, stating,
Well, I had something like that light show happen at Perth Stadium during a Big Bash game. And I just felt like it gave me shocking headaches, and it takes me a while for my eyes to readjust, and I just think it’s the dumbest idea for cricketers
He added,
So I just try and cover up as much as I possibly can and ignore it, but it’s a horrible, horrible idea. Great for the fans, horrible for the players
Glenn Maxwell said, “lightshow is a horrible idea. It takes a while for eyes to readjust and it’s the dumbest idea for cricketers. Definitely it’s great for the fans, but horrible for the players”. pic.twitter.com/zo7N39TzJC

His words sparked a huge discussion on social media. While many people supported his stance and questioned the presence of such light shows, many others defended light shows. However, among those who defended it, David Warner’s support for the light show garnered a lot of attention. It is not only because David Warner is a renowned cricketer, but also because he is Glenn Maxwell’s teammate.
David Warner replies to Glenn Maxwell’s opinion over the light show

He appreciated the light show and emphasized that it’s all about the fans and their support for the game. In his post on X, formerly Twitter, Warner wrote,
I absolutely loved the light show, what an atmosphere. It’s all about the fans. Without you all we won’t be able to do what we love

Maxwell’s incredible performance was the true highlight of the day
The differing opinions between the two players led to speculation among cricket fans about a potential rift between them. However, Maxwell had an absolutely amazing inning.
He had not faced a single ball until the 41st over when he came to the crease with Australia at 4-266. In just 40 balls, the 35-year-old cricket player scored his third ODI century in an amazing exhibition of power-hitting. His explosive innings included an array of reverse ramps, with nine fours and eight sixes. He broke the previous record for the fastest World Cup century, previously held by South Africa’s Aiden Markram (49 balls). Furthermore, Maxwell broke his own Australian record for the fastest ODI century, which he had set against Sri Lanka in the 2015 World Cup.
While Maxwell’s century took center stage, David Warner also achieved a significant milestone by becoming Australia’s leading century-scorer in ODI World Cups with his century. Against the Netherlands, he scored 104, which marked his sixth century in the tournament. It surpasses Ricky Ponting’s record of five centuries.
