To say that people are resonating with his take would be an understatement.

Business tycoon Anand Mahindra stresses ‘Quality over Quantity’ in the ongoing Work hour debate

Anand Mahindra recently participated in the Viksit Bharat Young Leaders Dialogue 2025 held in the national capital, where he addressed the ongoing debate around the idea of working 90 hours per week.

With his absolute wisdom, Mahindra brought a fresh perspective to the discussion. While expressing respect for leaders like Narayana Murthy, the Infosys founder, who had earlier stirred this debate, Mahindra emphasized that the focus should shift from the quantity of working hours to the quality of work being done.

“I have huge respect for Narayana Murthy (founder of Infosys) and others. So let me not get this wrong, of course. But I have to say something, I think this debate is in the wrong direction. My point is we have to focus on the quality of work, not on the quantity of work.”

Mahindra pointed out that the fixation on the number of hours, whether it is 48, 70, or 90, misses the bigger picture.

“So it’s not about 48, 40 hours, it’s not about 70 hours, it’s not about 90 hours.”

According to him, the real question to ask is about the quality of work delivered rather than the time spent.

When asked about his own working hours, Mahindra skillfully dodged the direct question and reiterated his belief that the debate should not revolve around hours but on meaningful output and productivity.

“This is what I want to avoid. I don’t want it to be about the time. I don’t want it to be about quantity. Ask me what’s the quality of my work. Don’t ask me how many hours I work.”

Netizens eagerly awaited his take on the matter and they absolutely found his response insightful and thought-provoking.

To strengthen his perspective, he shared an anecdote about a conversation with a Chinese individual who attributed China’s potential to surpass the United States to its workers’ 90-hour workweeks, compared to 50 hours in the U.S.
