India is gearing up for its 75th Republic Day on January 26, 2024, marking the day in 1950 when the country became a republic by adopting its Constitution. The day is commemorated with grand parades, cultural events, and patriotic fervor, showcasing India’s rich diversity and its democratic principles. Every year the nation celebrates this special day at the Kartavya path formerly known as Rajpath.

If you are a Delhiite you must be aware of places like Rajpath and Janpath. However, seldom people know their historical significance. Kartavya Path, formerly known as Rajpath, stretches from Rashtrapati Bhavan to India Gate, serving as a historic corridor integral to India’s struggle for independence. Originally designated as Kingsway, it played a pivotal role in establishing New Delhi after the capital was moved from Calcutta (now Kolkata) in 1911 during the British Raj. Witnessing the ebb and flow of the colonial era, Kingsway transformed into Rajpath post-independence, while its intersecting counterpart, Queensway, became Janpath.

Through its evolution, Rajpath has silently observed the unfolding saga of India’s journey to freedom and its subsequent emergence as a democratic nation. From the moments of Independence to the celebrations of Republic Day that is held annually for the past seven decades, the Rajpath stands as a testament to India’s resilience and determination. This historic stretch reflects the nation’s freedom from the shackles of colonialism and thereby the proud establishment of a sovereign democratic republic.

Renamed as Kartavya Path, this route symbolizes public ownership and empowerment

Back in September 2022, Rajpath went through a renaming by the Prime Minister of India. Under Central Vista Avenue, Prime Minister Modi officially renamed ‘Rajpath’ to ‘Kartavya Path’. The renaming marked a symbolic shift from Rajpath’s perception as a ‘symbol of power’ to Kartavya Path, emphasizing ‘public ownership and empowerment,’ according to the government.

While many of you may or may not know, back in the colonial days Rajpath now known as Kartavya Path was called Kingsway. During the inauguration, Prime Minister Modi declared that the once-called Kingsway or Rajpath, once seen as a “symbol of slavery,” is now consigned to history, having been completely erased. This move underlines the government’s vision for a renewed narrative and the evolution of this iconic stretch.

Kartavya Path starts at Raisina Hill near Rashtrapati Bhavan and stretches over five kilometers

Kartavya Path, the chosen route for the Republic Day parade, covers over five kilometers from Raisina Hill near Rashtrapati Bhavan, weaving through India Gate to conclude at the historic Red Fort. Beyond serving as a symbolic path for the nation’s journey towards Republic Day, it represents the shared responsibility and empowerment integral to India’s national character.

To foster international partnerships via this historic day, India has invited President Emmanuel Macron of France to partake in this year’s Republic Day celebrations.
