Gautam Gambhir was recently named the new head coach by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). He takes over for Rahul Dravid, whose three-year tenure as the men’s team’s head coach ended in June following India’s successful T20 World Cup campaign.
It’s interesting to note that Gambhir has never held a coaching position for a team at any level, whether it is national or local cricket. However, in the Indian Premier League (IPL), he first coached the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in 2022 and 2023. Then, on special request from Shah Rukh Khan, he became a mentor of Kolkata Knight Riders. It’s the team where he had previously won two IPL crowns.

Gambhir’s serious look has always become the talk of the town
Gambhir made an immediate impact upon rejoining KKR. The team went on to win the IPL 2024 trophy by playing aggressive cricket. His aggressive style made him the center of attention even if he didn’t have a coaching position. He was a part of the notorious brawl between Virat Kohli and Naveen-ul-Haq during the IPL 2023 match between RCB and LSG. Not only that but as a BJP politician and player in the game, he continued to employ the same strategy.
Due to this, his serious looks on the field and off the field have always been the center of attention. Now, Indian Rohit Sharma opened up about why their new coach always looks serious.

Prior to the ODI series against Sri Lanka, Indian skipper Rohit Sharma provided details about his discussions with new head coach Gautam Gambhir. In the pre-match press conference, he said,
We were talking about cricket that how we need to take the team forward where all do we lack and where all have we performed well. Basically, it was just about catching up as we couldn’t meet before and we only met here (in Sri Lanka). So, we were discussing about our plans ahead for the upcoming tournaments.
In addition, Rohit talked about Gambhir’s comic side in the locker room, stating that he frequently tells a lot of jokes. The captain also answered a frequently asked question concerning Gambhir’s serious attitude. He added,

Gauti Bhai has a lot of fun in the dressing room and cracks jokes. It’s his personal thing and we shouldn’t try and get into his personal space that whether he will smile or not. Everyone is unique, it’s someone’s personal choice.
Rohit Sharma discloses India is ready to prepare for the upcoming series
On Friday, August 2, India will begin their three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka. Encouraged by their most recent 3-0 T20I series win, the Indian squad wants to keep up their winning ways.
Following the 2023 World Cup, this series also signifies Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s comeback to ODI cricket. With the 2025 Champions Trophy approaching, India will be keen to try out and decide on their lineup. Rohit disclosed that the coach and he talked about India’s readiness for the next ICC tournament. As they prepare for the ODI series against Sri Lanka, the Indian squad has already started training under Gambhir’s direction.
