Uber Responds to Claim of Charging Different Fares on Different Phones

Did you know that Uber displays different fares for the same destination when booking from two different devices? Several people have previously stressed on the fare disparities on Uber when booked from an Android device and an iOS device. Recently, a social media user Sudhir made a post on X, that went viral on the internet.

Man shared two pictures to verify his claims where the fare difference is clearly visible

In his post, Sudhir shared two images showing the fares of an Uber App from an Android phone and an iOS device, while booking a auto for the same destination. As per the photo he shared, for the same pickup point, destination, and time, Uber Auto displayed different fares. Surprisingly, on the Android device, the fare was ₹290.79, while on the iPhone, it was ₹342.47.

Sudhir was taken aback and turned to social media asking his followers if they had faced the same issue of different rates when booking from different phones. He also mentioned that he often asks his daughter to make the booking with the fare on her phone is always less compared to his. He enquired his followers emphasizing on, “What is the hack?”, he wrote,

“Same pickup point, destination & time but 2 different phones get 2 different rates. It happens with me as I always get higher rates on my Uber as compared to my daughter’s phone. So most of the time, I request her to book my Uber. Does this happen with you also?” “What is the hack?”

The viral post got a response from the company. Uber wrote,

“Hi there, multiple differences in these two rides impact the prices. The pick-up point, ETA, and drop-off point on these requests vary, which will cause different fares. Uber does not personalise trip pricing based on a rider’s cell phone manufacturer.”

Netizens were surprised by the fare disparity and flooded the comment section with their opinions

In response to the post, a user jokingly said,

“UBER is peaking into ur SmS for Bank account balance it seems.”

Another commented,

“Yes, that happens with me too. Sometimes the difference is not much, but it can even be more than ₹30-50. Trust technology to play with your wallet.”
