Swiggy Agent’s Creepy Messages Went Viral As Woman Shares Screenshots

Cyber harassment is a persistent problem, and online harassment and violence have been on the rise in India in recent years, particularly since the widespread use of the internet for everything from communication to shopping. A similar thing happened recently.

Recently, a female named Prapthi has revealed screenshots of the “creepy” remarks she received from a Swiggy delivery man. After the delivery employee began texting her on WhatsApp, Prapthi claims she filed a complaint with Swiggy’s support team.

Number masking is a technology that allows delivery businesses like Swiggy and Zomato to contact customers over the phone without knowing their phone numbers and something like that.

However, it appears that the Swiggy representative was able to obtain Prapthi’s phone number since she phoned him through her call record rather than through the app. Following that, the agent started sending her weird texts like “Miss you lot” and “nice your beauty, nice behaviour,” among many other things.

While sharing the screenshots on Twitter, Prapthi wrote,

“I’m sure that most women on here can relate to this. I got a grocery delivery from Swiggy Instamart on Tuesday night. The delivery guy sent me creepy messages on WhatsApp today. Not the first time, not the last time something like this is happening.”

 

Noting that agents are aware of their clients’ addresses, creating a potentially hazardous situation, she pleaded with the food and grocery delivery company, saying,

“Please do not take harassment enabled by your app lightly.”

Adding that she will not again order meals late at night or while she is alone at home as a result of the experience, she stated,

“I’ve been in a situation where an incident has escalated to being real physical threat because of inaction by LE agencies. So, this was a trigger.”

Soon Swiggy’s escalation team and the CEO’s office contacted her, she stated in an update posted yesterday. She added,

“They listened to me and assured that they would do take all the necessary measures to stop this and to learn from this so as to prevent it from happening again.”

 

Prapthi suggested the following theory to explain how the delivery agent obtained her phone number, explaining,

“What I’ve understood is that the number masking function works if we use the app each time we call the delivery partner. If we have used the app once to call them and then use our call log to call them again, they see our number.”

Soon after this, she got lots of responses on social media and many people are supporting her. On the other hand, many people are demanding clarification from Swiggy about this incident. People asked Swiggy to guarantee that such an occurrence did not happen again in the comments section. Some even advised Prapthi to file a harassment case with the police.

Swiggy said the delivery agent was no longer operating in a statement. The company’s spokesperson says in a statement,

“We are aware of this unfortunate incident and have been in touch with the customer ever since. Swiggy maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate conduct of any kind, and the delivery executive has been deactivated from the platform upon investigation.”

He added,

“We remain committed to ensuring a safe delivery universe for our consumers, and request users to communicate with the delivery executive via the app alone.”

According to the spokesperson, delivery agents worked with Swiggy on a “principal-to-principal basis.” The spokesperson finally concluded by saying,

“The safety of our customers is paramount, and Swiggy constantly works towards upgrading technology builds, such as number masking, to better protect the sensitive information of its users.”
