Despite being multicultural, our country has long witnessed a tussle between vegetarianism and non-vegetarianism. However, social media’s introduction has increased the dispute by giving both sides a venue for advocacy and confrontation. Both well-known people and regular people voice their opinions, which occasionally results in heated discussions. Something similar recently happened between an X user and a Bollywood actress, Swara Bhaskar. The user’s post irked Swara so much that she had to respond in the rudest possible way.
The actress celebrates both religions and Swara got married to Fahad Ahmad last year. They welcomed their firstborn, a baby girl Raabiya in the same year. She had once expressed that her baby girl is a ‘mish mash’ of Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Andhra, Hindu, and Muslim.

Swara Bhasker criticizes X user for her post on vegetarianism on Bakri Eid
On Monday, actress Swara Bhasker slammed a netizen for discussing vegetarianism on Bakri Eid, a major Muslim holiday. Swara called the post “virtue signaling” and said she didn’t like how it was timed.
It all started when a food blogger named Nalini Unagar posted a photo of a vegetarian meal. Her meal included fried rice and a cottage cheese dish. However, irked Swara is her caption along with the photo. Her caption read:
I’m proud to be a vegetarian. My plate is free from tears, cruelty and guilt.

In response, Swara Bhasker commented,

Honestly… I don’t understand this smug self righteousness of vegetarians. Your entire diet is made up of denying the calf its mother’s milk.. forcibly impregnating cows then separating them from their babies & stealing their milk. You eat root vegetables? That kills the whole plant! Please relax with the virtue signalling just because it’s Bakr Eid !

How did people react to Swara’s statement on vegetarianism?
Needless to say, Swara’s response sparked a variety of reactions in the comments section. Many people supported her statement.
Agree. Cruelty to animals is involved even in a vegetarian diet. Even plants have life.
So it boils down to individual choice. There is no moral or ethical issue involved here.
Let’s not judge others. Let’s live at peace with ourselves for the choices we make.

Respect for everyone’s dietary choices is key.
Whether it’s meat or plant-based, each choice has its own significance.
Let’s focus on understanding and appreciating the diversity of food cultures, rather than judging or criticizing others.

However, some other people also took a stand for the food blogger. Many also slammed Swara for indirectly criticizing vegetarianism by putting half-baked facts and logic.
I totally agree that depriving a calf from her mothers milk is cruel
But , because a calf is deprived milk , so you are justifying the slaughter of millions of animals that too in a very brutal manner …
You guys have issue with cracker noise scaring your pets and Holi Colors…

Oh o.
Wonder why top nutrition experts around the world including @HarvardHealth encourage veg diet.
For health, for planet, for environment, for global warming, etc

You don’t have to sacrifice a cow or its calf to get milk! Shocking, right? Or perhaps this concept is too futuristic for some self-proclaimed intellectuals? Nowadays, cows and their calves are cared for with the highest standards, but it seems some folks are still stuck in the…

Why does this vegetarianism vs non-vegetarianism clash gain so much significance on Bakri Eid?
For the uninitiated, this vegetarianism vs non-vegetarianism clash is deeply rooted in the country’s socio-religious fabric, where dietary choices are often intertwined with identity and religion. Over decades, the discussion evolved, mirroring larger shifts in society and occasionally sparking heated disputes.
These kinds of controversies become frequent during festivals like Bakrid (Eid al-Adha), a festival that celebrates the practice of animal sacrifice. Although the Muslim community holds this practice in high regard, vegetarian entities may take severe objection to it. In recent years, the vegetarian vs. non-vegetarian debate has taken on significant political dimensions. As a result, people are responding strongly to these kinds of conflicts on Twitter.
