Her father is Telugu while her mother is Bihari. Chitrapu Uday Bhaskar, her father, is a Columnist. He is also a retired Commodore in the Indian Navy, who is counted among the most distinguished experts and critics in Indian security and strategic affairs. Swara’s mother Ira Bhaskar is professor of cinema studies at the School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University. She also has a brother named Ishaan Bhasker.

Swara completed her schooling at Sardar Patel Vidyalaya. She later pursued English literature at Delhi University’s Miranda House. There she was classmates with Minissha Lamba who is also a fellow actress. She completed her master’s degree in sociology from Jawaharlal Nehru University, Delhi.
