Shubman Gill Hospitalised

India’s cricket World Cup 2023 campaign got off to a strong start against Australia. However, the absence of their key opener, Shubman Gill, who is currently battling dengue, was visible. India’s top batting order departs the pavilion without contributing many meaningful runs to their side. When India loses their third wicket, they just have two runs on their scorecard.

In their opening game of the ICC World Cup 2023, the Indian team would have been lost if Virat and KL Rahul couldn’t manage the innings. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has formally disqualified Gill from the forthcoming game against Afghanistan, continuing his ongoing absence due to health issues. His expected comeback is scheduled for India’s third tournament game.

However, according to recent reports, Gill’s health has recently deteriorated. It resulted in his falling platelet count and hospitalization in Chennai. While his condition is being attentively watched by the BCCI medical staff, the signs so far point to his not making a quick recovery. The low platelet count prompted the decision to keep him away from the team during their match against Afghanistan. It is because it is a precautionary measure in line with dengue cases.

Shubman Gill’s platelet counts dropped

According to information from PTI, Shubman Gill was under medical observation at the Chennai team hotel, receiving intravenous treatment. He was hospitalized at Chennai’s ‘Kauvery’ multi-care specialty hospital. Gill was taken to the hospital when his platelet count dropped to 70,000, a number usual in dengue patients. The BCCI source stated that Gill will be released if his platelet count reaches 100,000.

Speaking to PTI, a BCCI source said,

“Shubman Gill was on drip at the Chennai team hotel for the last couple of days. However, his platelet count dropped to 70,000, and as it is a case with dengue patients, once the count is below 100,000, you are admitted to a medical facility as a precautionary measure. Once the count again goes above 100,000, he would be discharged.”

The BCCI statement also confirmed Gill’s continued stay in Chennai under medical supervision. It emphasizes the priority of his health over immediate team commitments. The BCCI statement said,

“Team India batter Shubman Gill will not be travelling with the team to Delhi on 9th October 2023. The opening batter who missed the team’s first fixture in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2023 against Australia in Chennai is set to miss the team’s next fixture against Afghanistan in Delhi on the 11th of October. He will stay back in Chennai and will be under the supervision of the medical team.”

With fans and cricket aficionados anxiously anticipating encouraging advances in Gill’s rehabilitation, the uncertainty surrounding his participation in the forthcoming matches lends a sense of suspense to India’s World Cup campaign. The Indian squad has expressed worries over the batter’s availability for the pivotal match against Pakistan on October 14. The absence of the batter is painfully felt. While there is optimism that Gill will recuperate in time to join the squad in Ahmedabad for the match against Pakistan, the issue is maintaining his match fitness after coping with dengue’s consequences.
