Karan Johar engaged Sharmila Tagore in a conversation about the iconic magazine cover where she boldly posed in a bikini, creating quite a sensation in its time. With curiosity, he questioned the veteran actor, recalling the photographer’s initial apprehension and the general disapproval from others.
Sharmila Tagore, reflecting on the memorable moment, shared insights into the behind-the-scenes dynamics. Acknowledging the photographer’s concerns, she expressed her personal satisfaction with the shot. However, she revealed that the aftermath was unexpectedly hurtful. She said as we quote,

“Yes, the photographer was slightly worried and I just thought I looked very nice. It really hurt me later because everybody interpreted it in such a way that I was upwardly mobile, I was trying to catch eyeballs. I didn’t feel like that.”
She shared how she only learned about the commotion when director Shakti Samanta urgently requested her return, cautioning against such public visibility.
“When it came out in Filmfare, I was in London and I was unaware till Shakti (Samanta, director) ji called me and said, will you come back quickly? There are terrible things happening here. He said if you want to be in the public eye, this is not the way to go.”

In agreement with Karan Johar, Sharmila Tagore acknowledged the parallel between the bygone controversy and the trolling that happens today on social media. Tagore expressed the unpleasantness she endured during those days as questions pertaining to her cover shot were asked even in the Parliament. She shared on KWK that,
“I can’t tell you…I believe questions were asked in the Parliament. It was not pleasant for me.”
She shared how she subsequently became more cautious and strategically opted for her next projects.
“After that, I was very careful and I chose ‘Aradhana’. It was the ‘RRR’ of our time.”
Amidst such discussions, Saif had a differing opinion
He shared how proud he was of his mother’s bold shot. He said,
“People in my boarding school used to ask me, is that your mum? I was very proud of it.”
