Kamal Nath Memes

On March 10, the day his father Madhavrao Scindia was born 75 years ago, Jyotiraditya Scindia posted a letter on Twitter, dated a day earlier and addressed to Congress president Sonia Gandhi. The letter announced his resignation from the Congress. Jyotiraditya had joined the party 18 years ago following the death of his father. For the past one year, it had been speculated that Jyotiraditya’s exit from the Congress was a matter of time. Finally, on Holi, the Gwalior royal put an end to the guesswork and made his move.

Minutes after he posted his resignation, the Congress expelled Jyotiraditya for ‘anti-party activities’-in similar fashion as it had expelled Madhavrao in 1996 when he resigned from the Congress. Madhavrao formed his own party, the Madhya Pradesh Vikas Congress, and even defeated Congress candidates in a subsequent election. Eventually, the Congress had to persuade Madhavrao to return to its fold in 1998.

Almost 19 MLAs left with Scindia and some have even come out and said that they were fed up with current Madhya Pradesh CM Kamal Nath’s tenure.

The Scindias have had a history of association with both the Congress and the BJP. Jyotiraditya’s grandmother Vijaya Raje Scindia started her political career as a Congress member and was Lok Sabha MP from Guna-a seat later represented by Jyotiraditya. In 1967, she quit the Congress and joined the Swatantra Party, and later the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the BJP’s previous avatar. She eventually became one of the vice-presidents of the BJP. Jyotiraditya’s aunts, Vasundhara Raje and Yashodhara Raje, are senior BJP leaders.

Many joked about Congress’s dismal condition on Twitter. Along expected lines, social media is flooded with memes on the situation.
