The Mirror, a new directorial project by Konkana Sen Sharma for the recent anthology Lust Stories 2, has drawn accolades from all sides. Although the movie contains a lot of graphic material, it is regarded by many as having the best narrative.
Its emphasis goes beyond sex and casts light on a significant yet sometimes overlooked aspect of our lives: our domestic servants. These people are crucial to our jobs and are in charge of keeping the peace in our families.

From making our beds to boiling our tea to preparing our meals, they oversee every part of our home. Hence, they constitute the basis of our daily existence. The narrative revolves around Isheeta (Tillotama Shome) who accidentally discovers her maid, Seema (Amruta Subhash), engaging in a sexual encounter with her husband.
In the movie, intrigued Isheeta begins to observe people in secret via a mirror every day. The narrative plays on the desire to spy on someone and the thrill of being seen. It digs into topics other than sexuality, including power relationships, casteism, misogyny, and, most crucially, the life of a working single woman. The exceptional performances by Tillotama Shome and Amruta Subhash further elevate it as the best segment among all the anthologies.
Due to this, many people are currently curious about the source of inspiration behind the movie. So, to clear all doubts, director Konkona Sen Sharma recently revealed what inspired her to make a movie on such a topic.
Konkona Sen Sharma reveals that The Mirror is based on real events
In a recent interview with the Hindustan Times, Konkana revealed that the inspiration behind her directorial venture stemmed from real events that occurred at her friend’s house. She said,

“I wanted to create something interesting around lust. So I was thinking from a mom’s angle, from the looking angle, or from the being watched angle. Then I came across a friend at a dinner party who told me how she’d walked in on her bai (maid) having sex in her house.”
This encounter ignited Konkana’s imaginative creativity, inspiring her to learn more about the incident.
On the work front, Konkona last worked on Death in the Gunj in 2016. With Lust Stories 2, she returned to direction after a prolonged hiatus of 7 years. When asked about the lengthy gap, she said,
“I’ve been busy as an actor. I’ve done a lot of work as an actor between A Death in the Gunj and now. I have a 12-year-old son; the pandemic came and went. I am, anyway, not a career director. I’m a career actor. I want to keep acting, and once in a while, if I have something worthwhile to say and I have the freedom to say it, then I’ll direct.”
While Lust Stories 2 is currently streaming on Netflix, Konkona Sen will soon appear in various movies and web series. She will appear in The Rapist as Nina Malik and in Metro… In Dino as an unspecified character. Apart from this, she is also set to make an appearance in a web series named Soup.
