“We have heard potato, tomato, but what is the meaning of Zomato?”

He jokingly went on to add,

“I saw an ad where cricketers Harbhajan Singh and Sreesanth argue, saying it’s ‘Zomato’ or ‘Zomaato’. So, what’s the real story? Where did the name come from?”

In response, Deepinder explained with a smile that the name originated from a simple idea. He shared,

“We wanted to go with ‘tomato dot com,’ but that domain wasn’t available.”

To solve this, he and his team creatively changed the first letter, creating a unique and memorable brand name: Zomato.

“So we changed the alphabet and got Zomato dot com.”

Romantic touch behind ‘Zomato’s’ fun app notifications

Every Zomato user keeps on getting romantic and quirky notifications to further order the food. During the same episode, Zomato CEO Deepinder Goyal shared a lighthearted behind-the-scenes story about the app’s popular notifications. He revealed that some of the playful, charming notifications on the Zomato app are inspired by romantic messages he sends to his wife, Gia.

He revealed with a laugh,

“Sometimes, my romantic messages to Gia inspire the app’s notifications.”

He then went on to share,

“I give full credit to our marketing team, who took my idea of ‘building a relationship with the customer’ a bit too seriously!”

Many have been curious about how Deepinder Goyal met his Mexican wife, Grecia Munoz, who he fondly calls Gia. Deepinder, who had been single for a long time, recalled how his friends would often set him up on casual dates, advising him not to take things too seriously. But everything changed when Grecia first visited Delhi. A close friend called him, urging him to meet this “special girl.” With surprising confidence, his friend insisted,

“If you meet her, you’ll end up marrying her.”

Intrigued by his friend’s rare sense of certainty, Deepinder agreed to meet Grecia, and that meeting marked the beginning of something truly special.
