Dharmendra Shuts Down Javed Akhtar

Sholay, directed by Ramesh Sippy and produced by his father, G.P. Sippy, is still ingrained in the minds of every generation as one of the great and iconic movies. The film stands out not only for its setting but also for its novel approach of focusing more on the friendship aspect than the love angle.

The iconic duo, Jai and Veeru, portrayed by Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra, became a household name for signifying friendship. The first image that comes to mind upon hearing the song Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge is Jai and Veeru’s scooter in the classic moment they are seated on their bike.

Interestingly, the movie also led to the blossoming of the friendship between Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra in real life!

And even after so many years have passed, both stars are still enjoying their bond with each other, which they made during Sholay. However, being in a friendship means that you have to protect your friend at any cost, even if you have to diss your fan.

And Dharmendra took this very seriously.

Dharmendra responded to a fan who tried to troll his buddy Amitabh Bachchan

Amitabh Bachchan and Dharmendra are well-known for their work together in films such as Chupke Chupke, Sholay, and Ram Balram, among others.

However, recently on Twitter, a fan alleged that Amitabh Bachchan was the “weakest link” in the 1975 film Chupke Chupke. Veteran actor Dharmendra replied to the accusation and gave it back to the fan, who also remarked that Amitabh’s performance in Sholay wasn’t superior to Dharmendra’s.

The fan’s original response was in reply to a reviewer who claimed that Chupke Chupke was their favourite movie because Bachchan “is so nuanced and natural—so perfect” in it. Replying to this, a fan responded,

“This fake adulation is laughable! #ChupkeChupke was a #Dharmendra film, he chewed it! #AmitabhBachchan was the weakest link of the film! And in #Sholay in no way Amitabh was better than Dharmendra, they were at best equal! Stop running down @aapkadharam for someone else’s PR!”

Replying to this, Dharmendra said,

“So Sweet. Love you Ajay.”

Dharmendra’s reaction follows a perplexing response to a recent interview with Javed Akhtar

The lyricist recently said that Bachchan was the final pick for the movie after Dharmendra rejected it. India Today quoted Javed as saying,

“Amitabh Bachchan was actually the last choice for Zanjeer. The script was written for Dharmendra ji but for some reason he later refused to work on it.”

In response to the article provided by a news source, Dharmendra responded to Javed’s statement by saying,

“Javed, kaise ho… dikhave ki iss duniya mein haqeeqaten dabi rah jaati hain. Jeetey raho… Dilon ko gudgudana khoob aata hai… kaash sar chad ke bolne ka jaadu bhi sekh liya hota”

Nevertheless, Dharmendra and Bachchan are still close friends. Recently, he tweeted a touching message to wish Amitabh Bachchan a happy 80th birthday.
