Food delivery applications have brought about a change in the way we order and eat in the modern era. Gone are the days when you had to call a local restaurant to place an order for your meals. Over the last ten years, an evolution of food delivery services through Zomato, Swiggy, and other platforms has changed the face of the food and retail industry. But this revolution has come along with some negative effects of its own.
One of them is associated with the problems of transparent pricing, delivery charges, and packaging. Consumers demand not only timely deliveries but also reasonable prices, as well as fair billing in terms of pricing. An instance that sheds light on this problem recently emerged when a customer accused Zomato of manipulating prices. On the social networking site, X (formerly known as Twitter), a customer complained about being charged beyond the stated MRP of some packaged snacks he ordered. Now, Zomato has responded to the incident.

Customer alleges being charged above MRP for packaged snacks
Recently, a customer complaint has been raised regarding the overpricing on their food delivery order made via the online food platform Zomato.
The matter came up when the X user, Vinay Singh, posted screenshots of his order details, along with pictures of the product packaging, on social media. In the post, he mentioned that he was being overcharged on the order placed on Zomato by a much higher amount compared to the MRP (Maximum Retail Price) listed on the packets. As per the screenshots provided, the order placed had chana dal priced at Rs 110 and salted aloo chips priced at Rs 65. However, according to him, the packaging of the products states the price of chana dal to be Rs 90, and the chips are priced at Rs 50.
Inquiring about the same, he asks,
Ordered via Zomato and noticed something strange. Charged: Chana Dal – Rs 110, Salted Aloo Chips – Rs 65. MRP on packets: Chana Dal – Rs 90, Aloo Chips – Rs 50. Why am I being charged above MRP? Is this customer manipulation?

This response shows that the platform has taken note of the matter and may be seeking more information about the order to investigate whether there was any issue with the restaurant’s listing or a technical glitch that caused the price difference. Although there has been no official statement from Zomato regarding the price difference, this case has once again raised the issue of price transparency on food delivery platforms.
