Zomato has undoubtedly made our lives easier by delivering delicious meals from our favourite restaurants right to our doorsteps. However, at times, mistakes do occur, leading to unpleasant experiences for customers. In a recent incident, a customer who ordered a mushroom biryani was shocked to find chicken biryani instead. Such mix-ups not only ruined the dining experience but also deeply hurt the religious sentiments of the customer. Zomato responds to the whole fiasco.
A Customer took to X and shared how he received chicken biryani instead of the ordered mushroom biryani on Tulsi Puja day
A man named Rakesh took to X on November 2 to express his disappointment with Zomato after a serious food mix-up that hurt his religious sentiments. He claimed that he had ordered a mushroom biryani from Chikpete Donne Biryani House through the platform but was instead delivered chicken biryani. What made the situation even more upsetting for him was that it happened on the auspicious occasion of Tulsi Puja, a day of religious importance.

In his post, Rakesh directly tagged @zomato, @zomatocare, and @deepigoyal, writing,
“Hey @zomato @zomatocare @deepigoyal — I ordered mushroom biryani but was delivered chicken biryani. This is unacceptable and has hurt my religious beliefs and sentiments on the day of Tulsi Puja. Please take this seriously and provide a proper resolution immediately.”
His words clearly reflected the emotional impact the incident had on him, especially given the timing of the festival.
To back up his claims, Rakesh shared multiple photos along with the post. One showed the chicken biryani that he allegedly received.
Another displayed an image that revealed the polybag with the order number matching the one in the app.
A third image showcased a screenshot of his Zomato order confirming he had ordered mushroom biryani.

Soon after Rakesh’s post was made public on social media, Zomato was quick to respond with a standard reply addressing the concern. The company commented under his post, saying,
“Hi Rakesh, this is extremely upsetting for us as we deeply respect your dietary preferences. Please allow us some time so that we can take this up with the restaurant partner.”

While the message reflected empathy and concern, it felt like a generic response rather than a strong assurance of immediate action on such a sensitive issue. However, incidents like this are far more serious than a simple order mix-up. When religious beliefs or dietary restrictions come into play, a mistake of this kind can deeply hurt people’s emotions and faith.
For many, food choices are not just personal preferences but an integral part of their spiritual practice. Receiving non-vegetarian food when one follows a vegetarian lifestyle, especially on a sacred day like Tulsi Puja, can be deeply distressing.
Both Zomato and the restaurant involved need to exercise extra caution in such matters. Proper checks should be in place to ensure that orders are correctly labeled, packed, and verified before delivery. A small act of negligence can lead to major emotional consequences and public outrage.

All in all, going forward, food delivery platforms and partner restaurants must treat such incidents with greater sensitivity and accountability to ensure that they never happen again. What are your thoughts on this mishap? Do share via the comments below.
