India has seen a significant shift with the emergence of online meal delivery services. Driven by factors like shifting consumer lifestyles and the widespread adoption of smartphones, the new phenomenon has become a part of our everyday lives. When they first started, platforms like Foodpanda, Swiggy, and Zomato concentrated on compiling restaurant lists and facilitating online orders.

However, as demand increased, these platforms broadened their product offerings and reached more cities. They also included functions like customer reviews and real-time order tracking. This popularity also led to fierce competition, leading to technological innovations such as AI-driven recommendations and strategic partnerships.

Needless to say, while enjoying this huge popularity, the online food delivery sector in India also faces various challenges. A major issue is whether or not customers are happy with the food they order. Customers of these services frequently receive defective or incorrect orders, which ultimately makes their mealtime miserable.

In a similar kind of instance, Zomato recently ruined a 10-year-old’s birthday in the worst way. Amidst the anticipation of celebrating a birthday, a Punjab family faced an unexpected tragedy as a 10-year-old girl tragically passed away after consuming her online-ordered birthday cake in Patiala.

The terrible act came to light after the family filed a complaint with Zomato. The matter soon becomes the talk of the town with everyone finding themselves talking about it. Responding to the situation, the online food delivery giant Zomato made an unexpected but best decision.

Tragically, Manvi, a 10-year-old girl from Patiala, Punjab, allegedly passed away from an alleged food poisoning after eating her birthday cake that she had purchased online. The awful incident transpired when Manvi and her sister seemed unwell after celebrating their birthdays and consuming the cake.

A video of the celebration showed Manvi’s family feeding her the cake, and then both kids throwing up around three in the morning. Soon, their family rushed to the hospital so that they could get proper medication.

Though her younger sister may have lived via vomiting, according to family sources, Manvi was not saved despite her best attempts. Following the family’s allegation, the police opened a formal case under Sections 273 and 304-A of the Indian Penal Code. Investigations revealed discrepancies, with no trace of the listed ‘Cake Kanha’ restaurant at the specified Patiala address, raising suspicions of a cloud kitchen operation.

Furthermore, an Amritsar-based billing address was mentioned on a Zomato invoice, which led to criticism of the business for its negligence. Reacting to this, the family petitioned the Health Department to prosecute the individuals in charge of cake preparation.

How did Zomato react to the whole incident?

Following the terrible event in Patiala, Zomato banned the eatery from its site. According to a report in Business Today, the corporation declared that the eatery had been taken off of its site. It also stated that the restaurant owner will not be allowed to run any businesses on Zomato going forward.

The spokesperson of the firm stated,

“We are heartbroken and deeply shaken up by the recent tragic incident that happened in Patiala. As soon as we learnt about the incident, which is now under police investigation, we immediately delisted the restaurant from the Zomato platform. We have also debarred the restaurant owner from operating any entity on Zomato. We are extending our complete support to the law enforcement agencies in the matter.”

The business added that they are “deeply shaken up and heartbroken by the recent tragic incident that happened in Patiala.”
