Every now and then we come across various reports of passengers encountering hygiene issues such as contamination and pests in their meals. Joining onto the list is a case where a passenger discovered cockroach in the Vande Bharat meal served to him.

Indian Railways faced renewed criticism for the quality of food served on its trains after a passenger traveling on the Rewa Vande Bharat Express discovered a dead cockroach in his meal from Rani Kamlapati to Jabalpur Junction.

Dr. Shubhendu Keshari, the passenger, shared images of the non-vegetarian thali he received, clearly showing the presence of the cockroach. Additionally, Dr. Keshari shared a picture of the complaint form he filled out at Jabalpur station, highlighting the unsanitary condition of the food served onboard.
On 3rd February he made the post on X (formerly known as Twitter). He wrote as we quote,
“I was travelling on 1/02/2024 train no. 20173 RKMP to JBP (Vande Bharat Exp) I was traumatized by seeing dead COCKROACH in the food packet given by them.”

The passenger’s images and complaint shed light on ongoing concerns about hygiene and food quality standards aboard Indian Railways trains. It would be a sheer understatement to say that this incident sparked outrage on social media. This prompted IRCTC to respond to the viral post on X.
IRCTC swiftly addressed the incident, extending an apology to the passenger for the unpleasant experience. In their response, they assured the passenger that the matter was taken seriously, imposing a hefty penalty on the responsible service provider. Additionally, IRCTC emphasized that monitoring measures at the source have been reinforced to prevent such occurrences in the future.
IRCTC exactly responded as we quote,
“Sir, our sincere apology for the experience you had. The matter is viewed seriously, and the hefty penalty has been imposed on the concerned service provider. Moreover, monitoring has been strengthened at the source.”
