The founder of Infosys, Narayana Murthy, triggered netizens after his advise of a “70 hours-a-week” work formula for youngsters. He gave rise to a debate after he suggested this to increase the overall productivity of the country. Several people who came to know about it shared their views on the matter on social media including several social media experts and business leaders. Business leaders backed his formula while several others emphasized that such a routine can lead to health issues due to stress which may result in cardiac problems. Concerns were raised about low remuneration and the lack of work-life balance.

In in an interview with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai at the inaugural edition of 3one4 Capital’s podcast, The Record, Murthy indicated that India’s work productivity is one of the lowest in the world. According to him, in order to compete with countries like China, the youngsters of the country must put in extra hours of work as Japan and Germany did after World War II. He added that India needs to improve its work productivity, and the nation’s progress should be the responsibility of the youth. Narayana Murthy stated,

“Therefore, my request is that our youngsters must say, This is my country; I’d like to work 70 hours a week”
Sudha Murthy was asked to comment on the ongoing online debate involving her husband
This debate reached Narayana Murthy’s wife and author, Sudha Murthy, and when News18 spoke exclusively with her and questioned her about the ongoing debate she finally tried to explain her husband’s point of view.
Sudha had a full-house talk session at the National Centre for Performing Arts (NCPA), on Sunday when she visited Mumbai in the capacity of an author at the recently concluded 14th Tata Lit Fest. Speaking about her books, philanthropy and being with Narayana Murthy, she shared that her husband is passionate and believes in “real hard work”.
According to News18, when she was asked about the ongoing debate, she stated,
“He has worked 80 to 90 hours a week, so, he doesn’t know what less than that is. He believes in real hard work and he lived like that. Hence, he has told what he felt.”
She also added,

“People have different ways of expression. But he lived like that, he had walked the talk. So, he has shared his experience”
Narayana Murthy and Sudha Murty have been together for around 45 years. The power couple have supported each other throughout and a lot has been written about it. When she was asked what she had learned from Narayana Murthy over the years, Sudha promptly replied,
“I have learnt a lot of things (from him). Number one is that keep an aim and work for that. Don’t be distracted neither to the left nor to the right. He keeps an aim and he works on that. [Second] When you are working, don’t leave any stone unturned. Third thing – if you have passion, only then you will excel. It is not your intelligence or dumb hard work, but smart hard work that will take you ahead.”
Narayana Murthy had made a statement on India’s low productivity a couple of days ago in an interview with former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai at the inaugural edition of 3one4 Capital’s podcast, The Record. Murthy touched upon the topic of youth labour and said he believed youngster must work 70 hours a week to boost country’s productivity, which he says is among the lowest in the world.
