Anupam Mittal reveals he went bankrupt when he was in his 20s

In an interview with Mashable India, Shaadi.com founder Anupam Mittal recounted living a lavish life in his twenties. He disclosed that he founded a company named Strategy.com, which was valued at $40 billion. As quoted by the outlet, he said,

“Some of us kids got together and started a venture called Strategy.com, just before the dot com boom. And we became worth $40 billion. We were multi-millionaires in our early 20s, at least on paper.”

He said that he has rented out stadiums and cruise ships for parties in the past. But then his entire world was turned upside down, and he was left with nothing. He said it occurred following the 2000 financial crash. He also mentioned how his family had criticised him for wasting all his hard-earned money. He stated:

“It was so intoxicating, we never thought we’d lose it. And against that paper wealth, we starting taking out loans to buy more stock. When the meltdown happened, we cancelled our Ferraris. We ended up owing people. But when we had money, we had a blast. We used to rent out entire football stadiums just for parties. We used to rent out cruise ships. Our company would be shut for a week, and we’d be chilling on three cruise ships. It was a different level. But when the meltdown happened in 2000, jeb mein do kaudi nahi bachi.”

Relatives criticize him for wasting his father’s money

Furthermore, he recalled how some family members would criticize him for wasting his father’s hard-earned money and staring a gift horse in the mouth by attempting to go his own way when he eventually returned to India and tried to restart.

He described the period as being rather difficult, but he had once more encountered the kinds of financial highs that left him unsure of what to do with his enormous money.

Anupam said that he was making between Rs 20 lakh and Rs 30 lakh in profit each month until Shaadi.com began to take off. He stated,

“We didn’t know what to do with the money. I bought cars, bought a house, but didn’t have the understanding of how to manage wealth. I had no idea what to do next.”

Despite dealing with lots of problems and facing criticism, Anupam Mittal was able to get it all back and experience more financial highs today. And it’s all because he didn’t sit down without doing anything. Today, all he can say to him is “yes, I did it!”
