One of the most sought-after names in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction is Indian wicket-keeper batter Rishabh Pant. Former cricketer Sunil Gavaskar had earlier presumed that Rishabh Pant’s departure from the Delhi Capitals (DC) ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction was due to a financial disagreement. But Pant recently confirmed that he didn’t leave Delhi Capitals because of a disagreement with the franchise over his retention fee.
Sunil Gavaskar presumed that Rishabh Pant left Delhi Capitals due to a dispute over his retention fees
Pant has been an important player for the franchise since his debut in 2016. He has scored more than 3,284 runs and served as the captain of the team.

In a video shared by Star Sports before the IPL 2025 auction, Gavaskar stressed that top players sometimes decide to leave their franchises to understand their true worth in the auction. He suggested that Pant’s case was similar, and he expects Pant to be targeted by Delhi once again in the auction.
The cricket legend said in the video,
“Delhi would certainly want Rishabh Pant back in the squad. Sometimes when a player is to be retained, there is talk between the player and franchise about the fees that is expected. As you can see, some of the players who have been retained by the franchise, they’ve gone for more than what the No. 1 retention fee would’ve been. Maybe there was some disagreement over there (fees).
“My feeling is Delhi would definitely want Pant back because they need a captain as well. If Rishabh Pant is not in their squad then they have to look for a new captain”

I was about to tag Rishabh, but then I saw his comment. The clouds of confusion have cleared; Rishabh is not coming back. Thank you for your services.

Is this the right time, 2 days before the BGT to have a discussion on IPL contracts. Should let the players concentrate on the all important Test series. Especially when the Test trophy is in his own name. What a dumb bunch of old cricketers have in India.

All ten franchises are expected to battle it out for Pant’s services as the IPL auction is just around the corner, on November 24 and 25 in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. The current purse balance suggests that teams like the Punjab Kings, Lucknow Super Giants, and Royal Challengers Bengaluru will go after his signature. A return to DC might still be on the cards.
Which team do you think Rishabh Pant will be a part of in the upcoming season? Let us know in the comments.
