Ravi Shastri Reveals How He Helped Virat Kohli Bring His Then GF Anushka Sharma To 2015 Australia Tour

A sweet example of this was shared by Ravi Shastri, who recalled how Virat, during the 2014-15 Australia tour, requested permission to bring his then-girlfriend Anushka along.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri recently shared a heartwarming story about how he helped Virat Kohli bring Anushka Sharma to Australia during the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar Test series.

When Virat Kohli was named Test captain during the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar series, he approached Ravi Shastri with a special request. Kohli asked Shastri if his then-girlfriend, Anushka Sharma, could join him on the tour.

“I remember when I was the coach in 2015…he (Kohli) wasn’t married then. He was dating Anushka and he came to me and said you know only wives are allowed, but can I get my girlfriend in here?”

At the time, only players’ wives were allowed to accompany them on tours. So Virat was skeptical about it. However, Shastri revealed that he made a quick call to the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to request a special allowance, which was granted.

” I said sure. He said no, the board isn’t allowing it. So I made the call and she came up and joined him.”

This gesture allowed Anushka to join Kohli, indeed marking a memorable moment in their love story.

Shastri further recalled how Virat Kohli’s performance reached new heights during the 2014-15 Border-Gavaskar series after Anushka Sharma joined him in Australia. Shastri shared that Kohli, who was already showing promise as the new Test captain, delivered a magnificent knock of 169 runs in the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.

By sharing this tale, he drew a touching parallel between Kohli’s gesture during the match and his recent century in Perth against Australia. He recalled that after reaching his 169, Kohli sent a flying kiss to Anushka in the stands, much like the one he blew after his recent 81st international century.

“In the first game, in the Boxing Day Test, he got 160 and at the end the scenes were same. The flying kiss went out just like yesterday. She’s been a big support for him.”

Anushka has been right by my side through thick and thin, said Virat Kohli after hitting his 81st international century

Following his sensational century during the Perth Test against Australia, Virat Kohli expressed gratitude to his wife, Anushka Sharma, for her unwavering support. Interestingly, the knock marked Kohli’s first Test century in 16 months.

Speaking with former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist post-match, Kohli said,

“Anushka has been right by my side through thick and thin. So she knows everything that goes on behind the scenes, when I am in the room, what goes on in the head, when you don’t play well, you make a few mistakes, when you are getting yourself in.”

Kohli further acknowledged that performing for his team and country remains his ultimate motivation, but Anushka’s presence makes a good match even more special.

“I just wanted to contribute to the team’s cause, you know I am not a guy who wants to hang around just for a sake of it. I take pride in performing for my country and just feels amazing, the fact that she is here makes it even more special.”
