Till now the tweet has been retweeted over 23,000 times and was liked by more than 70,000 users.

The prime minister did not explain the reasons that provoked him to consider quitting social media but it led to a barrage of requests from his supporters to revisit his stand. His political rivals jeered.

PM Modi joined Twitter in January 2009, when he was the Chief Minister of Gujarat. Congress leader Shashi Tharoor too joined around this time, but soon Modi’s following surpassed Tharoor’s who is lagging at 7 million now.

Soon after Modi’s tweet, several of his admirers responded to him saying not to leave social media while his opponents asked him to first unfollow those accounts he follows, which spread fake news. Some others said they will also leave social media if he does so while “No Sir” started trending on Twitter, urging Modi not to quit social media.

Reacting to the news, Congress leader Rahul Gandhi told PM Narendra Modi to give up “hatred” and “not social media”. “Give up hatred, not social media accounts,” Rahul Gandhi tweeted.

While Congress spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala in a tweet said he wished Modi would give this same advice to “the concerted army of trolls who abuse, intimidate, badger and threaten others every second in your name”.
