What exactly happened?
Neena Gupta is known for her bold nature and is courageous enough to defy social norms and live on her own terms. She made a shocking revelation that Pristish stole her daughter Masaba’s birth certificate from the registrar just to disclose her identity to the public.
Neena raised her daughter Masaba as a single parent, she embraced the challenges associated with it gracefully. However, having a child out of wedlock came with its share of problems due to societal prejudices. Being a public figure, she faced constant moral policing by media houses. It was Pritish Nandy who crossed all limits and planned the theft of Masaba’s birth certificate to disclose her identity.
In a previous interview with journalist, Rajdeep Sardesai, Neena Gupta narrated how the renowned journalist, Pritish Nandy, allegedly orchestrated the theft of Masaba’s birth certificate. After this tragic incident, the veteran actress openly called Pritish Nandy a ‘bastard’ for his actions. Her bold statement made it to public hoardings. Neena said,
“He stole my birth certificate from the registrar’s office. And I called him a bastard! It was on the hoardings… He went and stole! Pritish Nandy!”

How Pritish orchestrated his plan of revealing Masaba’s identity
Neena shared that Nabdy concealed his identity, pretended to be a family relative, and took Masaba’s birth certificate from the hospital’s registrar and published it without consent. She revealed in the interview,
“He (Pritish) sent somebody. So my bua, I was living with my bua, so she went and she submitted. They said, ‘Come after one week, we’ll give you the birth certificate’. So she went after one week and they said, ‘Wo toh le gaye aapke koi rishtedaar.’ By chance, I knew somebody who knew that person, usse pata chala ke he sent somebody and then he wrote an article. Wo pade likhe log karte hai toh tumhara toh kya bolenge.”
Masaba Gupta was branded as a ‘love child’
Pritish Nandy published the birth certificate in a magazine shortly after Masaba’s birth in 1989, sparking a widespread media uproar. Neena had intended to keep the document private, but the publication revealed the identity of Masaba’s father, West Indian cricketer, Vivian Richards.
Later in 2008, Neena got married to Delhi-based Chartered Accountant, Vivek Mishra at the age of 49. Masaba gradually got branded as a ‘love child’, as Masaba grew older because she was conceived out of wedlock.
