Speaking in the interview, Murthy highlighted how he viewed this act as a way to show respect to others, challenging societal norms that often stigmatize such tasks.

When questioned by his curious children about this practice, Murthy gently conveyed the importance of humility and equality, emphasizing that no one is beneath them. He instilled in them the idea that their privileged position is an opportunity to demonstrate respect for all individuals, regardless of their roles or societal expectations.

Reflecting on his conversations with his children, Murthy acknowledged their curiosity and keen observations. He clarified that the act of cleaning one’s own toilets is not a sign of superiority or inferiority but a demonstration of shared responsibility. Murthy highlighted the need to break down societal norms that might look down upon certain tasks, reinforcing the idea that everyone deserves respect regardless of their profession or position. He said as we quote,

“I would explain to my children gently and affectionately that these are the best ways of respecting other people. In our society, people always feel that those who clean their own toilets are looked down upon. Therefore, I would tell them that look, nobody is less than us”

He added,

“My children are very curious. They observe and have a lot of questions. I would tell them that look, nobody is less than us. It so happened that we have been put into a very advantageous situation by God.”

He elaborated on how cleaning one’s own toilet in India is still seen as a taboo

The billionaire mentioned how cleaning one’s own toilet in India is still seen as a taboo which is highly wrong. He shared that he recently talked to his kids about doing household chores like cleaning toilets. The reason being that it is especially wealthy households where cleaning one’s own toilet is considered an inferior job.

He emphasized the importance of not feeling entitled or arrogant about such tasks and encouraged trying to contribute fairly to society. He said as we quote,

“We cannot take that as our right, we cannot take it with a sense of arrogance, therefore, to the extent possible, we should try and do thing that will give us a sense that we are trying to be as fair to the society as possible.”

Mr. Murthy, the 78-year-old industrialist, dismissed any notions of venturing into politics, as he is too old now. He asserted that at his stage in life, he plans to dedicate his time to familial pursuits, cherishing moments with his children and grandchildren. Alongside family time, he also wishes to indulge in his passions, such as enjoying music and delving into diverse topics spanning from physics to economics.

His wife, Sudha Murty, echoed his sentiments, emphasizing that one doesn’t necessarily have to enter politics to serve the public. Indicating a similar stance, she highlighted her commitment to making a difference outside the political realm. Both Mr. and Mrs. Murthy underscored their belief in contributing to society through avenues other than political engagement, prioritizing personal fulfillment.
