A post in the subreddit r/IndianWorkplace has sparked widespread debate on corporate culture in India after an employee alleged that his manager ignored his leave request during his wife’s pregnancy and even suggested he work from the hospital. Shared from a throwaway account, the post includes screenshots of the WhatsApp conversation between the employee and his manager.
According to the Redditor, his wife was admitted for the delivery of their child. He gave the news to his manager and asked for only two days of leave. However, upon getting to know that his parents are also present with him and his wife, the manager reportedly asked if he could “take leave after a week” or consider working from the hospital.
He kept explaining that he needed to be with his wife and handle responsibilities related to the hospital, and WFH would not be possible. Initially, the manager seemed to suggest taking leave after 1 month or logging in from the hospital. However, later on, the manager asked him to send an email to HR.
The employee described the situation as helpless because of job security fears
In his post, the employee described feeling “helpless” and emotionally drained by the exchange. He wrote that at a moment when he should have been focusing on his wife and newborn child, he found himself justifying why he couldn’t sit with his laptop in the hospital.

However, his greatest concern was job security. He shared that with a child on the way and the ongoing financial responsibilities of raising a family, he feared pushing back too hard might put his job in jeopardy. He wrote,
