Once a revolutionary idea, online meal delivery services have grown to play a major role in metropolitan lifestyles worldwide. With a few smartphone taps, customers can now order meals from their favorite restaurants. Zomato, Swiggy, Uber Eats, and DoorDash are some of the players that revolutionize the traditional eating experience.
However, alongside this ease, certain significant problems have surfaced. Price aggregation and differences in rates between direct restaurant pricing and online platforms are some of the biggest problems that many customers are currently facing. It frequently sparked conversations about fairness, transparency, and how technology is affecting the food service sector.

Similarly, one customer recently accused Zomato of overcharging on LinkedIn. His post went viral and got various kinds of reactions.
Customer criticizes Zomato for higher prices compared to the restaurant for identical order
Recently, a LinkedIn user named Pratyay Banerjee ordered dry chili chicken and mixed Cantonese gravy noodles from Zomato. However, upon receiving the bill, he noticed a significant price difference between the bill for the same food ordered in restaurant and ordered from Zomato. In the restaurant, these things cost ₹370.
However, if you order these things from Zomato, you will get them at ₹563. This means that Zomato is charging ₹193 more than restaurant. However, this is not the only matter of contention.
Not only was the overall bill higher, but the individual dish prices on the Zomato app were also higher than what we get at restaurant. The restaurant charged ₹190 for the noodles, while Zomato listed them at ₹300. Similarly, chili chicken is priced ₹180 in the restaurant and ₹270 on Zomato.

While the incident highlights the growing concern over inflated prices on food delivery apps, it also sparks debates on whether convenience justifies the higher cost. Pratyay is not the first customer who complained about this discrepancy in prices. However, food delivery apps are not able to address this concern wholeheartedly. As more customers notice these discrepancies, it raises questions about transparency and fairness in pricing practices among food delivery apps.
