Traveling on Indian railways is always a delight for me because it gives me close exposure to everything that we cannot get on air flights. It’s also pocket-friendly, which makes trains the first choice for daily travelers. However, my experience with the IRCTC pantry is not that good.

Like me, other Indian railway travellers also frequently complain about the inadequate food served on 2-tier and 3-tier trains. However, with the development of social media, it is now quite simple to draw attention to issues with the general level of service given on trains, including the food.

Today, complaints are made and resolved immediately on Twitter, where a customer can mention Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC), a fully-owned subsidiary of the Indian Railways that offers ticketing, catering, and tourism services to customers.

However, these kinds of incidents often tarnish the image of the Indian railways. And it’s not like these incidents are decreasing. They are actually increasing and making people furious about the services provided by the Indian railways.

Something like this recently happened, which made everyone furious.

Recently, a piece of yellow paper was discovered inside a samosa that a traveller claimed to have purchased from the IRCTC canteen

While travelling by train from Mumbai to Lucknow. The paper looks to be a piece of wrapper that was accidentally mixed in with the snack’s dough.

The event was reported on Twitter by the passenger, Aji Kumar, and was quickly noted by IRCTC and the Railway Seva division of the Ministry of Railways. In the tweet, Kumar claimed that he didn’t see the paper until he had already eaten some portions of samosa.

Taking to Twitter, he wrote,

“I am on the way to Lucknow today 9-10-22 I bought one Samosa to eat.. Some portions taken and lastly this is inside in it… Pls look the yellow paper inside somosa… Its served by the IRCTC pantry person in the Train No. 20921 Bandra Lucknow train…. Started train 8-10-22..”

He added,

“What a hygienic foods supplying by the Pantry provided by IRCTC…”

He went on to say,

“This Samosa served IRCTC pantry provided in Train No. 20921 Bandra bound Lucknow weekly exp. started on 8-10-22..i bought it 9-10-22 morning around 10:15 AM…. I salute IRCTC for the foods serving to the passengers…”

In response to the tweets, Railway Seva, a government-run account created to assist railway passengers, said they were investigating the situation. Responding to the tweet, it said,

“Sir, inconvenience regretted. Kindly share pnr and mobile no in DM.”

However, netizens continued to discuss the declining standards of ticketing and food service on Indian trains despite the prompt response.

One person pointed out that the shredded gutkha wrapper that Kumar discovered inside the samosa was not “yellow paper,” while another jokingly remarked that it was the IRCTC’s take on a fortune cookie with an Indian twist.
