Immigration has long shaped India’s social, economic, and cultural landscape. The idea of going abroad is often tied to opportunity, stability, and upward mobility. Yet, as patterns of migration change, so do the motivations and consequences attached to those changes. Increasingly, debates around immigration are related not only to economic gain but also to identity, citizenship, and quality of life. Maybe it’s because life abroad isn’t always as glamorous as it seems.

Long hours, job insecurity, cultural adjustment, and emotional upheavals of living away from extended family, the problems migrants have to face, are ever-present. At times, while financial security increases, social isolation and mental tension can offset material comfort. A recent example shows this narrative is changing. An Indian woman who went back to Kerala from Dubai with her family recently shared in an Instagram post about why they chose to leave the UAE. Here’s what she has to say regarding her decision.

Visa and rent renewal become a triggering point

According to her, the incident that made them reassess their choices was the time their visa renewal and the renewal of the rent of their house in Dubai coincided because of similar renewal deadlines. This made them stop and think about continuing the status quo.

Calling it a rare chance to assess their priorities and plans together, she said in the video:

That pause forced us to look at everything calmly, practically, and honestly together as a family, and especially as partners.

This period of reflection allowed them to understand that their notion of a fulfilling existence was changing from material security to emotional security and stability.

Their child’s routine also becomes a turning point

One of the most important factors in their decision to move to India was related to their child’s daily schedule. While in Dubai, their child had to wake up very early in the morning and travel almost 90 minutes to school on a daily basis. After returning to India, an international-level school was available just near their place, and the travel time was only around 10 minutes.

This greatly enhanced their life, as they were able to spend more time together, and less stress was involved as they no longer had to travel for extended periods.

Financial freedom and emotional comfort are other factors that led to taking such a big step

This move also helped the family financially. The family had existing expenses when staying in Dubai. Staying in their own home in Kerala helped the family save on rentals and thus attain a debt-free lifestyle. Speaking about this, she says,

Today, we are in a no-debt, no-EMI situation. That mental freedom mattered more than we realized.

In addition to the financial side, the emotional factor of going back home had a fundamental role to play. Being close to parents, relatives, and the community helped instill a sense of belonging in them after being away from home.

Meanwhile, in the caption of her Instagram post featuring the video, she advised others to have open discussions before making any life choices. However, it is essential to note that each situation comes with its own uniqueness, yet communication within a family setting is vital.

Emphasizing the importance of making a decision collectively and ensuring it was done with a clear understanding, she said,

What worked for us may not work for you.

How did netizens react to her post?

Her experience has clearly touched the hearts of many on social media, as people commented in support. Many people said that sometimes the search for peace, families, and emotional fulfillment is more important than material and luxurious comforts.
