Indian Professor reply Diplomats UN

India’s decision to abstain from voting at the UN Security Council against Russia’s war on Ukraine stems from a deep-rooted grudge against the role Western players as well as the UN have played in safeguarding New Delhi’s own national security interests — be it in relation to Jammu and Kashmir, Bangladesh, or for that matter, China.

On Friday, India’s permanent representative to the UN, T.S. Tirumurti, chose to do what India has always done traditionally whenever it was expected to take a stance against Russia. India abstained on a US-sponsored UNSC resolution that “deplores in the strongest terms” Russia’s “aggression” against Ukraine. Tirumurti “regretted” that the “path of diplomacy was given up” and urged all parties to “return to it.”

In the 15-member council, the resolution received 11 votes in favour and one vote against (Russia), with three abstentions (India, UAE, China)

“By abstaining, India retained the option of reaching out to relevant sides in an effort to bridge the gap and find the middle ground, with an aim to foster dialogue and diplomacy,” official sources said.

However, if certain foreign diplomats are to be believed, India’s decision to abstain from voting has been “disappointing” & “disgraceful.”

Former National Security Adviser of the United Kingdom, Mark Lyall Grant, took to Twitter and slammed India’s UN stance amid Russia-Ukraine crisis. Mark wrote,

“Disappointing that India and the UAE abstained on UN Security Council Resolution deploring Russian military aggression against #Ukraine. What price standing up for democracy and territorial integrity? In 2014, all elected members voted to condemn Russian annexation of Crimea.”

Responding to a British diplomat who found India’s response to be “disappointing,” Dr Anand Ranganathan, a professor fron JNU, used the quote from Lagaan movie, and wrote,

“Not one of you, or your friends in the EU, condemned China when it provoked us, tried to invade us, and killed our soldiers. NOT ONE. A thousand diplomats won’t be able to convey what Kulbhushan Kharbanda did in Lagaan in one sentence: Ye gore apne baap ke bhi sage nahin hote.”

Back in 2020 & 2021 when Chinese troops crossed into Indian territory and killed soldiers in an act of aggression of foreign land, most western powers, especially the United Kingdom and the United States, verbally stated that it was an unfortunate incident. Dr Ranganathan rightly points out that no western country condemned China nor was a resolution introduced. We were left alone to defend ourselves.

People on Twitter supported Dr Ranganathan, and pointed out west hypocrisy
