The emergence of Indian railways is a tale of growth, development, and transformation. Its past has always been entwined with India’s history and development. The first passenger train trip took place between Mumbai and Thane in 1853, covering a distance of just 34 kilometers. Since then, Indian Railways has grown quickly from its early days. Due to the necessity of establishing connections between different areas for communication, trade, and business, Indian Railways have grown to be the backbone of India.

This growth was instrumental in integrating the vast and diverse country. As a result, it knitted together people from different linguistic, cultural, and geographical backgrounds. The railroads acted as a critical route for the movement of people and products, encouraging the flow of information and resources that were essential to India’s growth.

Despite its importance, Indian Railways faces significant challenges due to overcrowding. The sheer volume of passengers using the railway system every day has led to congestion and a strain on the available infrastructure. Many trains are frequently overcrowded, particularly those on well-traveled lines.

Another major problem faced by Indian Railways is the presence of ticketless passengers. While some people may choose to travel without a ticket because of the need for money, others do it on purpose in order to avoid paying costs. A recent incident on the Delhi Sarai Rohilla SF Express (22949) also highlights the ongoing issue of ticketless passengers overcrowding Indian trains.

The passenger complained about how ticketless passengers jam-packed the AC1 coach of the train

Kushal Mehra, who was traveling in the first AC coach and had a ticket, complained about his unpleasant incident on ‘X.’ In his post, he detailed how ladies obstructed his way to the restrooms outside his cabin. Along with this, Mehra shared photos of the packed location on social media and talked about how hard it was for him to even get to the bathroom because of the crowding. In his post, he wrote,

“The horror on Train no 22949 Delhi Saria Rohilla train first ac continues. Outside my cabin right now when I woke up and went to use the washroom. I couldn’t even click the others on the right as I couldn’t walk past these women. I asked the attendant, and he says this is how it is. No one does anything @RailMinIndia. PNR NO: 8215769471. Coach no HA1. A1 Cabin. This is organised ticket less traveling right outside my cabin!!!!!”

The situation didn’t stop there. Mehra also posted another image of women conversing while seated on the ground; this one was probably shot from inside the carriage. Sarcastically, he wrote,

“This is the latest update right now. They’re really relaxed and having a great chat discussing railway policy making I guess @RailMinIndia”

How did the railways react to the incident?

After tagging the railway minister in his posts, Mehra reported that the unauthorized occupants outside were eventually removed. He added,

“And it gets cleared when they find out I tagged the minister. I am never traveling by trains ever again in my life.”

Users reacted angrily to the incident

The video became viral very fast, receiving over 845,000 views on the website and eliciting a wide range of reactions from the general population. One user expressed shock at the state of affairs on the first AC carriage and questioned what must be going on in the lower classes.
