Artificial intelligence (AI) has brought about revolutionary changes in society at an unprecedented pace, changing the work patterns in industries, governments, and our personal lives. But besides all positive aspects, another aspect has become evident with AI, and that is the fast-growing trend in AI crime. The one that raises concerns the most in the community is the emergence of deepfakes – extremely realistic yet entirely fake images, video, or audio. While the availability of AI has been on the rise, so have ways of misusing it.
The use of artificial intelligence technology in cybercrimes and scams has been escalating, moving beyond mere internet mischief into organized crime. Hackers are leveraging deepfakes in order to defraud, extort, impersonate, and spread fake news. In fact, there was a case recently illustrating how dangerous the problem can be. Recently, an AI-generated image of the Prime Minister of Italy, Giorgia Meloni, in lingerie, went viral on the Internet. Now, Meloni has made her response to this situation.

Giorgia Meloni urges caution online after an AI-generated lingerie image of her goes viral
The Italian Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni, recently expressed concern regarding the increasing abuse of artificial intelligence following the circulation of a manipulated photo that showed her wearing lingerie on social media platforms. In response to the controversy, Prime Minister Giorgia addressed the situation on X (formerly known as Twitter). She wrote,
In these days, several fake photos of me are circulating, generated with artificial intelligence and passed off as real by some zealous opponent.
Moreover, she threw in some sarcasm to emphasize the severity of the situation, saying,
I must admit tha whoever created them, at least in the attached case, has also improved me quite a bit. But the fact remains that, just to attack and invent falsehoods, nowadays anything at all is used.
Going beyond her own incident, Meloni cautioned people against the possible consequences of artificial intelligence technology. She wrote,
The point, however, goes beyond me. Deepfakes are a dangerous tool, because they can deceive, manipulate, and strike anyone. I can defend myself. Many others cannot. For this reason, one rule should always apply: verify before believing, and believe before sharing. Because today it happens to me, tomorrow it can happen to anyone.
