The human body varies enormously in shape and size depending on heredity, lifestyle, medical conditions, and other factors. However, in the age of social media, this inherent diversity is simply not being taken into consideration or even made the subject of ridicule. The social media sites that were originally intended to encourage self-expression have now become sites that enforce standards of physical beauty in an inhumane way, mocking all those who do not follow them.

The incidence of online body shaming has seen a tremendous increase with the growing rate of consumption of online content. This ugly culture often affects celebrities or prominent people in life, thus proving the point that being in public life does not actually grant you immunity. A recent incident with Aamir Khan’s daughter, Ira Khan, brought this issue to the forefront again. She was body-shamed by a netizen following a public appearance. This led to actor Abhinav Shukla targeting the concerned netizen for the same.

Why was Ira Khan trolled?

Ira Khan had been part of the Tata Mumbai Marathon to support the causes of the Paani Foundation and the Agatsu Foundation. She was accompanied by her father, Aamir Khan, and her husband, fitness trainer Nupur Shikhare.

Instead of commenting on her charitable work, some social media users commented on her appearance. An X user made derogatory remarks about Ira’s marathon outfit, a white tank top paired with black shorts, questioning her body type and choice of clothing. In her post, the netizen named Sapna Madan wrote,

This is Ira Khan, daughter of Aamir Khan. The problem is not the clothes, it is the body. I do not get why people refuse to dress for their body type and still choose to walk around looking indecent. Decency never goes out of style.

This post soon prompted negative feedback due to its body-shaming and fatphobic undertones.

Abhinav Shukla reacts strongly to body-shaming comments against Ira Khan

Actor Abhinav Shukla strongly reacted to the comment and came out in support of Ira Khan. Taking to social media, he criticized the mindset behind making such statements about Ira Khan and also went in support of her authenticity. Quoting Sapna Madan’s tweet, Abhinav Shukla wrote,

One Star Kid who is real & down to earth, she dont act entitled , no drama, no show off, no entourage of 5 bouncers & managers ….much of the time she and her brother are traveling in a rick dressed up like normal kids.  Whats wrong here i dont understand !  She is at-least putting an effort to be active !  Dressing is purely personal choice !

What did Ira Khan earlier say about her body shape?

Ira Khan has often spoken about body image and weight earlier. Last year, the 29-year-old had shared a candid video on Instagram, talking about how her body had changed and how she had found self-acceptance since 2020.

In the caption of her video, Ira wrote,

Yes, I’m fat. I’ve been oscillating between thinking I’m fat or unfit, becoming overweight, and being obese since 2020. There’s a lot to be said about it, and definitely things I still need to figure out. But I feel at least a small shift for the better, so I’ve decided to start talking about it and sharing.

She added that discussing her weight felt “a little scary” but was required, even though she does not have a diagnosed eating disorder and is not an expert. Ira Khan added,

I may not be as articulate or confident as when I spoke about my depression. Unlike that, this feels a little scary. But I really think it needs to be talked about. I don’t have a diagnosed eating disorder and I’m also not an expert. Just sharing my experiences. Venture into the comment section at your own risk. I know I will be staying far away from it. Let’s see how this goes.
