Munawwar Rana is a famous Urdu poet and poet of India. He is very popular among the Indian and foreign audience. His popularity can be gauged from the fact that his works have been translated and published in many languages. Rana’s poetry has also been translated and published in Hindi, Urdu, Gurumukhi, and Bangla. Munawwar Rana has been awarded the Sahitya Akademi Award for his poetry book, Shahdaba.
He was born in a Muslim family in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh on 26 November 1952. His real name is Sayed Munawwar Ali. After the partition of India, most of his relatives had migrated to Pakistan, then it was his father who preferred to stay in India. Munawwar Rana’s childhood was spent in Kolkata and was educated from the same school. The turmoil of partition took away the zamindari from his father. After this, his father started the business of transport work to make a living. Munawwar Rana loves his mother very much and expresses the love of mother in his poetry. Munawwar Rana shayari on Maa is ground-breaking in which he used the genre of Ghazal to extol the virtues of a mother. While living in Kolkata, Munawwar was very much attracted to Naxalism. Due to which he started meeting the Naxalites and some of them also became his friends. When his father came to know about this, he threw Munawwar out of the house, and for the next two years he wandered here and there without any purpose. Once he told in his interview that, “I learned a lot in those two years in which he understood human values and the meaning of life”.

When Munawwar went to Lucknow, the culture of the place fascinated him so much that Lucknow became his most beloved city. In Lucknow, he met the famous Ghazal poet Wali Asi. He started learning poetry on the advice of Wali Aasi. Due to this, he credited his poetry skills to Wali Asi. Munawwar sang his Nazms for the first time in a Mushaira in Delhi. In the year 2015, he faced severe criticism for returning the Sahitya Akademi Award due to communal harmony. Today, he is married and lived in Lucknow with her wife and daughters.
