Syed Athar Hussain Rizvi aka Kaifi Azmi was an Indian Urdu poet who brought Urdu literature to Indian motion pictures. Born on on January 14 January 1919 Kaifi Azmi saheb wrote his first ghazal when he was just 11 years old. And it’s not a matter of surprise that he went on to win heart of millions with his writings.
Kaifi Saheb poems are noteworthy for their rich imagery. The intensity of emotions and compassion for the disadvantaged sections of society are the hallmarks of his poetry. His writings expressed feelings of a rejected heart, rebel against societal orthodoxies and advocated for a progressive society. Azmi contribution to Bollywood is also big. Some of his evergreen lyrical gems are, Tum itna kyun muskura rahe ho, Jhuki Jhuki si Nazar etc. His best known poems are Aurat, Makaan, Daaera, Sanp and Bahuroopni.

The renowned Urdu poet received many awards and accolades including Sahitya Akademi Award and the the Soviet Land Nehru Award, he was the recipient of Padma Shri, India’s fourth-highest civilian award in 1974.
