I was so frustrated before I started working for my present company, during a time when COVID-19 had made the labour market exceedingly competitive. I spent hours conducting video interviews on several platforms, going through timed evaluation methods, and participating in role plays in order to land a job.
Not only me, there are also many other people who are waiting for their turn to get their dream jobs.

Likewise, recruiters are also under pressure and frustrated. It may have taken weeks or even months to find and hire the ideal applicant whose qualifications met all the requirements. The candidate accepted your offer of employment.
However, there are other groups of people who didn’t value the chances they got. Just before the start date, candidates change their mind and opt not to join the company in which they are selected. It’s not only about small companies; it can happen to any company.
A recent example of how a candidate refused to join the company just before the official joining has been shared by Prashant Pitti, a co-founder of EaseMyTrip. He shared his conversation with the selected candidate, which has gone viral now.
EaseMyTrip co-founder shared a chat with a candidate who refused to join at the last moment
Currently, Prashant Pitti, a co-founder of EaseMyTrip, has split the internet by sharing a dilemma that employers frequently experience on social media. A screenshot of text exchanges from a candidate who abruptly backed out of joining the firm was posted by Mr. Pitti.

Along with the screenshot, he wrote on Twitter,
“Someone pls solve this hiring issue. This is hugely prevelant & ends up wasting so much time & resource Once a candidate accepts offer-letter, companies wait for months & rejects all other potential candidates. But candidate decides on very last day, that they won’t be joining”
He added,
“Many people falsely equating this to, employers firing people. Firing and quitting happens all the time. Real equalizer would be, if employers also start to offer-letter and then on joining-date say NO to candidate, as they found better employee! Would this be acceptable? Big NO”
He went on to say,
Also it’s very common, 25-40% of the hired candidates, say they won’t be joining at the last minute. And its not just the juniors, happening at senior level equally. If this is happening to an org as big as ours; I can’t even fanthom what’s happening at newly launched startups!

Shark Tank India fame Ashneer Grover also has his said on the issue raised by Prashant
Prashant – In India there is no value of contract – neither would you go after someone nor would they as legal system is broken and expensive. So in India it’s – ek haath le doosre haath de. Best to tone down your expectation that you employ daily wagers in guise of salaried folk

It is a real problem. Larger companies have more infrastructure to deal with this. For startups especially it is a real issue.

While many supported the employee
You guys pay extra to immediate joiner, Why?? Are you ethical enough? You hire those who can join you immediately and we join those who pay us more money. If you are looking for job then you will do the same. Stop playing victim.

Earlier this week, Shantanu Deshpande, the CEO of the Bombay Shaving Company, also received a deluge of mixed views over a social media post. As opposed to seeking work-life balance, he recommended that freshmen in his role work 18 hours each day. And now, Prashant Pitti has become a target.
