The mode of purchasing daily necessities has seen a complete revolution in the last few years. It is no longer necessary to visit a nearby supermarket; everything can be purchased from the comfort of our homes with just a few taps on a phone. Quick delivery services, such as those offered by Blinkit and Flipkart, which promise to deliver within 10 to 30 minutes, have become one of the most significant advancements in e-commerce today.
Nevertheless, the speedy development of this industry has raised several concerns, especially regarding the delivery partner welfare, sustainability, viability, and product quality. Quality management becomes an important factor while dealing with high volumes of perishables. For instance, recently, a complainant pointed out that an instant commerce site named Blinkit delivered expired bread with fungus. Not only this, but the company also denied a refund request. The company later responded to the complaint. However, the complaint had gone viral on social media by that time.

Customer shares photos of moldy bread ordered from Blinkit
It all started when the netizen Harnidh Kaur shared some photos of a packet of multigrain sandwich bread on the social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The customer alleged that the bread delivered by the delivery app company Blinkit had passed its expiry date by three days and was moldy in multiple places.

In her post, the customer complained about two factors – firstly, the state of the product itself; secondly, how the platform allegedly failed to give a refund despite the same. Along with the photographs of moldy patches on the bread, Harindh says,
Arre bhaiya @letsblinkit why do you send expired bread and then refuse to refund. There’s literal fungus on it and it was 3 days past date! Gross.

Sabka yehi haal hai. I recently ordered from @zeptocares and received products where the expiry date was removed intentionally and then no support was provided.

This is deliberate. Quick commerce stores routinely push expired/moldy stock when fresh ones are out, then stonewall refunds. Classic cost-cutting scam.

Who is checking their dark store rooms for quality? Just too many incidents like this, with food and grocery items one shouldn’t take a chance. Blinkit is also more expensive than Zepto.

This situation highlighted once again the issues surrounding the problem of maintaining quality control within dark stores and warehouses for ultra-fast delivery systems.
