In a time when most sequels are dull and unimpressive, Special Ops 2 is a remarkable success. The Special Ops franchise has now released its eagerly anticipated second season on JioHotstar. Its first season aired in 2020, during the height of the pandemic. Five years later, with significant changes in the entertainment landscape, people are thrilled that this sequel, co-directed again by Neeraj Pandey and Shivam Nair, has surpassed their expectations.

This time, this spy thriller explores contemporary espionage and cyberwarfare. The plot follows Himmat Singh and his RAW team making their way from Budapest to Delhi while battling a new kind of foe. We can say that to fight this enemy, they are pushed to the edge in season 2’s gripping cyberthriller. In addition to Kay Kay Menon’s return as Himmat Singh, a staunch intelligence officer, this season surprisingly features Tahir Raj Bhasin’s dark portrayal as Sudheer Awasthi, a tough new enemy.

Premise of Special Ops 2

Special Ops 2 focuses on contemporary warfare through economic manipulation and technology. Kay Kay Menon is again getting a lot of appreciation for his portrayal of RAW officer Himmat Singh. However, other actors, including antagonist Tahir Raj Bhasin, also stole the limelight at some points. Sudheer Awasthi, played by Tahir, was a dangerous Indian businessman based in Georgia.

Using a powerful spyware program named Megasus (modeled after the real-world Pegasus software), he aims to destroy India’s economic infrastructure and digital payment system.

Two startling events at the beginning of Special Ops 2 shake the Indian intelligence establishment. Unidentified attackers abduct Dr. Bhargava, a vital AI specialist with access to top-secret government projects, and another important intelligence officer, Vinod Shekhawat, and his wife were killed. Himmat Singh took charge of the situation and, in a rush to retrieve Bhargava, he and his RAW team began investigating in several different nations.

Who betrays Himmat Singh and the RAW team?

The tension in Special Ops 2 builds when Sudheer’s network continuously keeps one step ahead of RAW. This indicates that someone is betraying RAW from within the organization. Early speculations pointed towards Bakshi, a senior intelligence official, because of his past actions. He had previously ordered the release of a Chinese spy.

However, the real culprit turned out to be one of the biggest twists of this season. Shockingly, it’s Naresh Chadda, one of Himmat’s most trusted co-workers, who turns out to be the true traitor. He had been deliberately framing Bakshi by using a phony SIM card.

Special Ops 2 ending explained

The season ends with a multifaceted attack on Sudheer’s Georgia compound. While Harminder tries to locate and eliminate the online dangers, Farooq and Abhay spearhead the actual attack. India’s economy is on the verge of collapsing when Sudheer has Bhargava log into the OBI system, escalating the tension.

In the last confrontation, Farooq fights Sudheer to death while Abhay uses a truck loaded with explosives to demolish his server infrastructure. However, even after their Operation Pixels ended with Bhargava safely extradited, the wider effects of economic manipulation and cyberwarfare still hang over India’s security environment.

Another engaging twist that made this series a must-watch

Although the most significant aspect of the film ends with the villain’s death, several of the subplots, including the characters’ backstories, also touch on the more complex aspects of filmmaking, making this series a must-watch.

Special Ops 2 delves into the personal costs of intelligence work in addition to the primary plot. Himmat’s character gains emotional depth through his bond with his daughter, who learns she is not his biological child. Finally, in the closing scene, Himmat is reunited with his wife and daughter after being released of his mission.

The season also presents the sad tale of Subramaniam, demonstrating how societal shortcomings may transform obedient subordinates into hostile adversaries. Nevertheless, Subramaniam grieves the death of his wife as the climax comes to a tearful close.

Possibility of Special Ops season 3

Even though Sudheer’s immediate threat has been eliminated, India’s intelligence community still faces more significant difficulties. The season raises the possibility of future storylines by implying that cyberattacks and economic warfare will remain significant issues. Interestingly, director Neeraj Panday also signalled the same. Speaking about season 3’s possibility, he said that it is undoubtedly in the cards. At the Special Ops 2 marketing event, Panday said,

JioHotstar has not notified us about the third season, but we hope to take things a notch higher in the new installment, whenever it is made. I hope the audience will love our work, as the entire team has given 100 percent to the project.

In response to the question of whether the second and third seasons will be released at significantly different times, the director stated,

It won’t be the case.
