Food delivery giant Zomato has once again found itself making headlines, this time for a puzzling issue raised by a customer on social media. The user pointed out two separate food orders placed from the exact same location, displaying different delivery distances in kilometers. A user posted a tweet questioning Zomato’s delivery logic and raised questions over app algorithms and transparency.

The user, Tanmay Prerana Thaker, added a laughing emoji to add a light-hearted tone to the situation. He is frustrated about how the same delivery address can generate different distance estimates. One order shows the distance as 5 km and the estimated time to be 13 minutes, and the other order shows 8 km and 19 minutes.

The screenshot shared by the user shows that despite placing two orders from the same restaurant and delivering to the same address, the app displayed different kilometer readings, potentially affecting delivery time and charges.

Zomato responded to Tanmay, claiming their improved the accuracy of distance calculation on our app

Zomato said that they have improved the accuracy of distance calculation on the app to fairly compensate their delivery partners for the distances they travel.

Hi Tanmay, we have recently improved the accuracy of distance calculation on our app to fairly compensate our delivery partners for the distances they travel. With enhanced precision, some locations that were previously receiving free delivery despite being outside the eligible distance have now been rectified. Feel free to reach out to us if you have any further queries.

This kind of discrepancy may also raise billing concerns. While Zomato usually offers free delivery for Zomato Gold users or for minimum order amounts, kilometer-based charges still apply in many cases, particularly during peak hours or under surge pricing.

Reportedly, Zomato uses dynamic mapping systems to calculate estimated distances and delivery times based on several factors like traffic, distance, weather, etc. However, inconsistencies like these suggest that either there’s a lack of transparency in how these metrics are calculated or the algorithm isn’t accurate.

This isn’t the first time Zomato has come under fire for algorithmic confusion. In the past, users have flagged issues related to delayed order deliveries, altered delivery routes, and fluctuating charges, often without proper explanations.

With more people depending on online food delivery platforms daily, clarity in pricing, distance, and delivery logic is necessary. Customers expect consistent information, especially when services are increasingly automated.
