India celebrates a historic economic milestone by outperforming Japan to become the world’s 4th largest economy. But the condition of the toilets at Panvel Railway Station, India, tells a different story. It is one of the busiest railway stations in Navi Mumbai. Most public toilets have broken fixtures, a lack of running water, unbearable stench, and zero maintenance in some places. Passengers, including senior citizens, women, and children, are often forced to ignore the unhygienic conditions during emergencies. The poor condition of the toilets is unfit for any public facility, let alone a station.

This acknowledgment shows hope that public feedback is not falling on deaf ears. The real result, however, will make an impact only if there is a visible, on-ground improvement in the days ahead.
India’s rise to 4th in global GDP rankings is a moment to celebrate, but it also brings the responsibility to ensure that development is visible not just in numbers, but in everyday experiences.
