AR Rahman’s recent alleged ‘communal’ remarks landed in controversy
Recently, during an interaction with the BBC Asian Network, AR Rahman talked openly about being less visible in mainstream Hindi film industry movies for 8 years now. Reflecting on the industry’s changing power dynamics, he said,
People who are not creative have the power now to decide things, and this might have been a communal thing also, but not in my face.
He also clarified that this issue was usually brought up in a remote manner. Suggesting that decisions were sometimes influenced beyond artistic merit, he said,
It comes to me as Chinese whispers that they booked you, but the music company went ahead and hired their five composers.”
During the same interview, Rahman also spoke about the film Chhaava that starred Vicky Kaushal. He said that the movie was “cashed on the divisiveness.” His comments spread like wildfire. Some people condemned the composer for being politically and communally motivated with such remarks. However, many others defended him for expressing his own personal experiences.

As the backlash became more intense, AR Rahman posted a video message pertaining to the issue. The composer said that he never intended to cause pain and hoped his sincerity would come through. In his video message, he said,
Dear friends, music has always been my way of connecting, celebrating, and honoring a culture. India is my inspiration, my teacher, and my home. I understand that intentions can sometimes be misunderstood, but my purpose has always been to uplift, honor, and serve through music. I have never wished to cause pain, and I hope my sincerity is felt.
The composer also emphasized his appreciation for the nation, saying,

I feel blessed to be Indian, which enables me to create a space that always allows freedom of expression and celebrates multicultural voices. From nurturing JALA, presented at the Wave Summit in front of the Honorable Prime Minister and Ruhi Noor, to collaborating with the young Naga musicians to create a string orchestra, to mentoring the Sunshine Orchestra, to also building Secret Mountain, India’s first multicultural virtual band and the honor of scoring Ramayana alongside Hansamma. Each journey has strengthened my purpose.
