Vehicles have become a crucial component of contemporary society, influencing people’s methods of traveling, working, and socializing. However, it has become necessary to have adequate regulations and identification of the vehicles, which necessitates the use of number plates. Number plates are not only a metal plate fitted in a vehicle, but also represent the identity of a particular vehicle. The government uses number plates to keep track of vehicle ownership, tax payments, and other violations of traffic rules.
In India, all registered vehicles have a registration number provided by the Regional Transport Office (RTO). Such number plates aid traffic police and transport departments in identifying vehicles easily, thus enforcing the law related to road transportation. The color of the number plates used in India has significance and differs depending on the category of the vehicle and the owner’s purpose. Among the many types of number plates, red number plates often attract public attention and curiosity. So, let’s get to know more about them.

What does a red number plate indicate?
While most of us may think that red plates are used by VIPs and government officials, the truth is actually very simple and connected directly with the vehicle registration procedure in India. Usually, red plates mean that the vehicle is registered temporarily. Once a customer buys a car or motorcycle, temporary registration is provided by the dealers immediately so that the vehicle can be driven on the road according to traffic rules.
Such plates usually contain white figures and letters on a red background. The temporary registration plate is considered to be valid for just a limited period of time, which should not exceed one month. It will allow the driver sufficient time to get his or her car registered officially. The system is designed to ensure that buyers do not have to wait several days or weeks before taking delivery of their vehicles.
Who is allowed to use red number plates?
Temporary number plates are legal in India only for those new vehicles that have been approved for temporary registration. These registrations may be done through authorized dealerships or transport departments after the purchase process is over. Luxury cars, imported vehicles, and premium bikes are also often seen with temporary red plates before their permanent registration numbers are allotted by the RTO.
Nevertheless, it should be noted that these temporary number plates should only be used for a short period. After the expiration of the temporary registration, the owner of the car needs to fit permanent number plates that are approved by the transport department.

In the past, such official cars were used without having any number plates; only the national emblem was present. But in accordance with a judgment from the Delhi High Court that seeks to bring an end to ‘VVIP culture,’ these official constitutional vehicles have to be registered under the Motor Vehicles Act; however, they maintain the same red and gold appearance.
