The reason why BSF hangs empty glass bottles on the India-Pakistan border

The India-Pakistan border, especially the sections in Punjab and Rajasthan, is one of the most sensitive borders across the globe. The Border Security Forces guard the border and are constantly faced with the threat of infiltration and smuggling activities. Although the border is equipped with the latest surveillance devices, including night vision cameras and motion detectors, it is not possible to deploy such high-end technology across the entire border, especially the rural sections around the farming areas and the riverine sections.

This is where the empty glass bottles come into the picture. Hung from the fence, the bottles are deployed as an alarm system.

Does it actually work?

While many of you discard this desi alarm, saying that it’s too basic and doesn’t even have scientific backing, you are wrong. The bottles produce sound when the winds are high and the bottles rub against each other.

More importantly, if someone tries to trespass or touch the fence, the bottles will break or produce sound due to the movement. The sound produced by the breaking bottles during the quiet hours of the night acts as an alarm system for the security personnel deployed in the area.

Cheap but more effective than a machine

This technique is very cost-effective compared to the high costs of thermal imaging cameras and laser-based alarm systems, which can run into lakhs of rupees. Bottles are readily available, and the cost of installation and maintenance is very low. This technique is especially useful in areas where the terrain and weather conditions may not allow the deployment of the latest technology. In these areas, the bottles would be a welcome addition to the security system, without putting any additional burden on the system.

In areas such as the Punjab and Jammu sectors, the winters bring a thick fog that reduces visibility to almost zero. Sometimes, in such areas, the best of security systems may not be able to detect movement. It is during these times that the Border Security Force relies on the ‘bottle technique,’ which has proven to be a simple and effective security system in any kind of weather.
