11 Characters From Sanjay Dutt’s Biopic And Who Is Playing Who In Sanju

The trailer of ‘Sanju’ has hit the internet, and the hearts of millions of fans of actor Sanjay Dutt whose life has gone through a series of trials and tribulations. The trailer shows a glimpse of the film which will eventually reveal the true story of the National Award winning actor, his addictions, the close bond he shared with his parents and the many women who entered and exited his life during his ups and downs.

The trailer introduces us to nearly everyone connected to Dutt’s life. So who are they? And who plays whom? Here is a look.

1. Ranbir Kapoor – Sanjay Dutt

The titular role of the iconic Dutt is being played by Ranbir Kapoor, whose transformation for the role has been so amazing that people mistook him for real-life Sanju. Of course, besides Ranbir’s dedication, praise must also go to the make-up artist for perfectly giving the young 35-year-old actor the various avatars of the 58-year-old Dutt from his early days to his present.

2. Sonam Kapoor – Ruby

It was earlier believed that Sonam Kapoor is playing Tina Munim (now Tina Ambani), a childhood friend of Sanjay Dutt. But Sonam plays a character called Ruby. It is not clear on whom is the character based but she leaves Sanju due to his addiction.

 

3. Anushka Sharma – a biographer

Though it was said that she is playing either a filmmaker or a journalist, Rajkumar Hirani himself confirmed that Anushka Sharma is playing a biographer from London who comes to India and is asked by Sanjay to write his story. “She is basically playing a mix of me and Abhijat (writer Abhijat Joshi),” said Hirani.

4. Manisha Koirala – Nargis Dutt

Manisha Koirala plays one of the two most important people in Sanjay’s life – his monther Nargis Dutt. It is said that Sanjay’s descent to destruction began with Nargis’ death in 1981, which came just before the release of his debut film ‘Rocky’. Sanjay heavily took to drugs to cope with the tragedy thereby triggering the fall in his personal life.

5. Paresh Rawal – Sunil Dutt

Like Nargis, Sanjay was very close to his father Sunil Dutt – a role played by Paresh Rawal. Rawal is a veteran actor and is known for essaying some of the toughest roles with ease. Sunil Dutt devoted his life to protect his son from the many problems he landed himself into. The role was initially offered to Aamir Khan but he declined it due to scheduling conflicts with ‘Dangal’.

7. Jim Sarbh – Drug dealer

Though some reports initially suggested that Jim Sarbh plays Salman Khan in the film, the ‘Padmaavat’ actor is actually playing the role of a drug dealer.

8. Dia Mirza – Manyata Dutt

Mirza plays the role of Manyata Dutt – Sanjay’s third wife. Sanjay married Manyata, who was born Dilnawaz Sheikh – a Muslim – in 2008. The couple has two children. Manyata Dutt, too, was an actress who is best known for the item song in Prakash Jha’s ‘Gangajal’.

9. Karishma Tanna – a gold digger

TV actress Karishma Tanna plays Pinky, a girl who is presented as a gold digger. It was believed that she will be playing Madhuri Dixit, who once was rumoured to have an affair with Sanjay Dutt before the latter was charged under TADA. In real life, Madhuri and Sanjay will come together again next year in Karan Johar’s ‘Kalank’.

10. Boman Irani – father of Tina Munim

There were rumours that the brilliant Boman Irani is playing director Sanjay Gupta, who happens to be a close friend of Sanjay Dutt and has worked with him on many popular movies since 1994 including ‘Kaante’ and ‘Aatish’. But Irani plays the role of Tina Munim’s father. Irani had earlier said that he plays a character who is close to Dutt in real life but not many know about him.

11. Vicky Kaushal – a close friend

It was believed that Vicky Kaushal of ‘Masaan’ fame will be playing Sanjay Dutt’s brother-in-law and his best friend Kumar Gaurav. But the actor who you recently saw as Iqbal Sayed in ‘Raazi’ is actually playing a different friend named Kamlesh “Kamli” Kanhaiyalal Kapasi. Kumar Gaurav was an actor and is the son of yesteryear’s superstar Rajendra Kumar.
